Lethargic baby. I would appreciate advice. Mia is 9-10 weeks old, and we got her last Saturday. She had been doing very well until yesterday when she vomited in her carrier. She had had a lot of excitement though. First she went to the vet's office for her first visit, then we took her to the mall to get her carrier, and there she met lots of people (which she loved) and she also got many treats. Even though she vomited, (and had to be washed) she was happy and perky after she took a nap. Well, today she has not been eating well. I gave her a couple of pieces of her dry food by hand, but she lost interest after a while. She drank little water, and she has been sleeping all day. She always tries to follow me inside the house, but today she just hides behind our "groove bag" (which is a bean bag on steroids). She lifts her head when I say "Mia" but then puts her head back down. I called the vet about Mia's disinterestedness about food and I think the vet receptionist thinks I have nothing better to do (and I don't think she is familiar with the needs of Yorkies) and she just told me to look in the back of her food bag for the necessary amount she needs to eat every day and maybe give her some canned food (that i mentioned she usually likes). Mia got more sleepy after I called the vet so we gave her a tiny bit of nutri-cal in case she has low blood sugar but she just went right back to sleep. My question is, should I continue to freak out and take her to the vet? Is there anything to watch out for? Please help, I don't know if she is sleeping because she is a baby, or if there is something wrong with her. |
I would give her some more nutrical and watch her very closely. Sounds like she had a very exciting day yesterday and being a tiny pup, she is probably still tired. In the meantime, I would start looking for a new vet that has experience with Yorkies. :D Please keep us posted. |
Look at her very closely and follow your intuition. If you feel like something is wrong, then take her to the vet. Better a vet bill for no reason than no vet bill and a very sick baby. Good luck :) |
Nutrical and handfeeding Due to the stress and activity of yesterday, your baby may be having a hypoglycemic episode. You should keep an eye on your pup, give Nurtical at regular intervals, and hand feed. I am not sure what dosages you are talking about so I will let experts help you further. I think if your pup doesn't perk up soon, you need to see a vet. Young puppies can go down quickly. Good luck! |
I got Cali at that age and she wen thypogycemic 3 times on me. 2 times she had to be Iv'd for the day. If you see no improvement with the Nutrical real soon I would get her to a new vet or complain to the vet about the receptionist attitude. These little babies can go down so fast. I never hesitate to take her in and my vet and all the receptionists have always fit me in because they know you can't fool around with a tiny puppy. Please keep us updated. But also just my opinion, she is too young and new to your home to be taking her out a lot and getting a lot of treats. They are like newborns. I hope she perks up soon. |

I just fed her some Innova Evo canned food by hand, and subsequently she seemed more energetic, but she keeps hiding behind the groove bag to sleep. |
I agree give her nutrical. You've gotten good advise from everyone here please follow it. |
I typically use more Nutrical than that....I may "overuse" but have never had any ill-effects. I use about a 1/2-1 inch ribbon on my finger and then put it into their mouths. In addition, I would continue to hand feed, the EVO will be fine, and let your vet know how she is doing. I, personally, would call and have speak to the vet personally...there is only one receptionist at my vet's that I speak with and I know she will follow through on my guys need's. IMHO, I think she is hypoglycemic and had way too much excitement and stress yesterday. Keep a close eye on her and let us know how she is doing and if we can do anything else for you. Good luck. |
Perhaps I'm a little bit more paranoid, but since Sissy got dehydrated very quickly with diarhea and since your baby gots lots of treats yesterday and then vomited, it is possible she became sick from something she ate. How do her gums appear? Are they light pink and tacky to the touch? If so, she is in dehydration and needs to be seen. Lethargy that lasts this long would be cause for alarm for me. When in doubt, I'll opt for the vet bill. Please keep up posted. |
sick Baby You can give Nutrical every two hours if needed.Just make sure she drinks water. Maybe try some baby food-chicken. The little baby has a upset tummy from the treats.I would make a appt with the vet now. I hope she feels better soon. |
I would give her more nutrical and call the vet back and bypass the receptionist since she seems clueless and talk to the vet. I would also at that point make an appointment to bring her in. When they are small the don't have much reserves. I hope she feels better soon. |
You need to give about a fingertip of Nutracal. Pea size is not enough. |
How is the little one doing? If she isn't better, it might be time to call the vet. Like LuvMySissy said, they can dehydrate very quickly and that is BAD news. :) |

I agree! That was what I was going to say! Hope she is doing better! |
Thank you so much Thank you all for lots of helpful advice. Mia is doing much better. We gave her more nutrical and hand-fed her a bit more. She is a ball of energy again and she eats and drinks on her own. The can of EVO is more than half gone and she had some dry food too. I will continue to watch her closely, and no more outdoors for a while. I am thinking of having a little talk with the receptionist at the vet about the size and needs of Yorkies, and her attitude of course. She has been weird before, when I had to call about the death of my cat. Our vet is pretty cool though, so we'll see. Again, thanks a lot for your replies. Mia and I appreciate it. |
