Another Ear infection We had to go to the vet today. Katy has her third ear infection (allergies). This time after we get it clear up she will be on a ear infection prevention treatment. Hopefully this will help us. Is anyone else fimilar with this? If so, does it work? |
I am sure someone knows as I sure don't. I hope she feels better soon. My Annika also was diagnozed with a yeast infection in her ear . . . and am now taking care of it! |
My tuz has allergies really bad and almost always (if not watched) will have an ear infection. I just keep them clean all the time with alchol and occasionally odi max that I get from the vet. Works good. Good luck. |
Jazzie suffered from Yeast infections too both on her nail beds and ears in addition to severe dermatitis. After talking to her dermatologist and her alternative medicine doctor we switched her diet to Natural Balance Duck & Potato formula and she has not had ANY allergy related problems since the switch. The trick is to get rid of any foods high in Gluten. From www.dogtorj.tripod.com: Dog foods and treats many times contain the food ingredients that have been most often incriminated in food allergies and intolerances. Historically, the main allergens have been dairy products, cereal grains (wheat, barley, corn) and beef in the dog. So, when deciding which foods to buy for your pet, especially for the allergic pet, try to follow these basic guidelines first: Things to Eliminate: 1) Wheat, barley, rye - ALL of them. (including bread, snack crackers, treats, wheat/gluten, etc.) 2) Dairy products - ALL of them. (including milk, cheese, whey, casein, dried skim milk, etc.) 3) Soy – ALL (This is also a major problem in people. See www.mercola.com‘s Soy Index Page) 4) Corn- ALL (including corn gluten meal)- This is important in asthma, pain syndromes, and epilepsy. 5) Beef and fish - (only if allergy symptoms are present/persist. These are “secondary“ allergies.) 6) Artificial preservatives and colors - (You want to see “preserved with vit.E“) By eliminating the above items, you will be taking care of at least 80% of all food allergens and all three of the major sources of food intolerance (gluten in grains, casein in dairy, and soy protein.) This must be considered in ALL foods, including TREATS and TABLE FOOD. Milk Bones and Beggin’ Strips, for example, are loaded with wheat, artificial preservatives, and many of the animal proteins to which pets may be allergic. Safe Pet Foods: *Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice Adult formula (available at pet shops) *Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Duck and Potato (available at B&B PetStop, Cottage Hill) *I.V.D. - Potato-based diets available through veterinarians. The “Cadillac”. *I.V.D., and Nutro Treats- Available here and at pet shops. *California Naturals- Chicken and Rice dog and cat foods. (available at pet shops) *Canidae and Felidae Pet Foods- None of the "big 4" but many different proteins present. If symptoms persist after 3-6 weeks of starting these diets, then blood testing is available to identify other food allergies. |
I've never dealt with that, but I hope she feels better soon :) |
That is good information. I am going to order the food today. She has a ritual sip of milk with her Daddy every night. Quote:

I think the Nutro Lamb and Rice helps too. Tried the Dick Van Patten and my dog threw it up and wanted no more. (even though it was mixed into the Nutro). But I thought the ingredients looked really top knotch. My beagle mix has chronic ear infections, and I give him ear drops EVERY DAY and have been doing this for years. In addition, when they get bad, we occasionally do rounds of antibiotics. He has both food and airbourne allergies, so the Nutro helps but he still has problems if I neglect the drops. (Every once in awhile I've thought they seemed really good, and stopped cleaning and medicating...big mistake everytime!) |
I have a feeling that is what I am going to have to do. Quote:

Ear and Skin Allergies I don't know if they work, but Romeo has had several ear infections and itchy flaky skin from time to time. A cortisone shot helped for about 3 weeks. We are documenting what he eats, where he goes, and frequency of symptoms to try to help him through this. He gets miserable. |
I hope that you find out what is causing it! Poor baby. Quote:

I don't know if it's ear infections, but my boxer has allergies and he scratches his ears nonstop. We just got eardrops from the vet for him and it helps. I hope your dog gets better! Is it painful for her or just itchy? |
I deal with ear problems like that with my cocker Tessa ALL the time. Mostly she is on Baytril and Ottomax when she has infections - and I use an Ear Cleaner in between - that really helps keep the ear debris free & clean. I don't think it's common in yorkies like it is in Cockers to have problems - maybe once you get this one cleared up things may be ok ? The solution help prevent infections is clear right ? I've never heard of prevention medicine - The Solution I use only flushes the ears - then acts like a drying agent. I use it all the time with Tessa. Good luck - hope this helps a little for you !! |
The stuff he gave me is MalAcetic Otic. It says that it is a Ear/Skin cleanser. We still have 4 more days of antibotics (Clavamox) and ear drops Otomax. He doesn't want me to start the cleanser until we are done with the antibotics. What is the name of the solution that you use? Quote:

I hope your baby's ears are better today. My little one just went to the vet Friday for the same thing- couldn't find anything wrong with her ear though? But she keeps rubbing it and scratching it. |
