neuter and biopsy aftercare my 7 months old, muffin was neutered and tattooed today. the doctors also did something called biopsy, skin scraping and other things so they can send the skin tissue to the lab for a check up since he has really FLAKEY SKIN. the doctor said after they did ANOTHER skin scraping... they found out he had parasites all over his body which is slowing his immune system but we got antibotics for that. now muffin has stitches all over his back body and neck and to make matter worse, he wont stop licking "down there" so the nurse suggested we buy a cone for his head. but unfortunately he doesn't like the cone very much so he keeps on whining and won't move. what should i do?? |
you could either try a muzzle or put a onesie on him, i hope this helps! get better soon muffin! |
Oscar was just neutered last week too - I put his tiny lampshade on him and sat there and watched him to see what he would do... after about a minute he suddenly freaks out and tries to pry the thing off - he got his paw stuck in the neck of it and in his struggle he started to CHOKE! I'm so glad I was sitting there! So no more cone for him! SOOO... I cut up an old t-shirt and made a little diaper for him fastened with safety pins at the top. He wouldnt walk with it on.. kinda did a hopalong type thing.. couple 'hand' stands... but it kept him from licking! I only kept it on him when I couldn't watch him. As for the rest of him.. I dont know where his other stiches are, but if he can get at some of them, I would just put a little tshirt on him to keep them covered. Hope he feels better soon and all his tests come out ok! |
2 Attachment(s) In January Cal ihad surgery and spay and biopsies and had a big incision. She started licking the incision so I went to walmart and bought some onesies for babies and put it on worked like a charm she didn't mind also when I picked her up I didn't have to put my hands directly on her incision. |
thanks, i will try the onesie i was thinking of sewing him 2 pairs of baby mittens to prevent him from scratching his stitches off but i dont know if that's going to work. i hope his skin will get better, its been 4-5 months now since he had this skin problem. |
I bet the parasites he has are mites. Chachi had that and about lost all his hair on his back and was really scabbed up. They get them when their immune system is down. Meds didnt help Chachi he had to be dipped at the vets office 6 times every 10 days. It was awful when he had that it seemed like nothing was ever going to make it go away. |

yes, muffin does have mites.. :( :( :( he will be on some antibiotic for 42 days starting tomorrow after that he will be heading back for another check up and skin scraping. |
I would talk to the vet about giving him things like Vitamin C and Echinacea to strengthen his immune system. Also something like Benebac (beneficial bacteria) to counteract the antibiotics destroying of good bacteria, as well as the bad. |
i'm currently giving muffin antibiotics called "IVOMEC" (ivermectin), it's made for cattle, sheep, and swine but the vet told me to use it for him. |

i go to the SPCA ( http://www.spca.bc.ca/ ) in canada and they also sent a few tissue samples to the lab so i'm waiting for the results. at the mean time, the doctor suggested to give muffin that as an antibiotic.. she said it might take up to months or even years to get rid of all the parasites/mites |
Poor baby...you'll need to treat your home too - I heard they're very hard to get rid of. That's got to be so uncomfortable for him and get well wishes to your little guy. |
does anyone know any dog cream i can put on his area, he can't stop licking it when he's not supposed to and now his penis is bleeding a little. is there anything i can do to make his neuter heal faster? the vet didn't give me any antibiotic FOR the neuter (i dont know if they supposed to?) but they did for his parasites. |
Call your vet my vet had a spray that kept them from licking that area |
Aloe vera (pure) has a bitter taste that usually works and is safe if they do lick it. |
