Sick? We were gone during the holiday weekend and Sissy was boarded at the Vet clinic. After arriving home last night, Sissy was fine for a few hours and then had a BM, the end of which was very loose. She had quite a bit of diarhea about 5:00am. She has not had any more BM's, has urinated a few times, has drank a little water, eaten some apple and cheese and appears to be playful. The vet's office did leave a message yesterday that her repeat stool sample is still showing giardia, so I will pick up medication for her today. She has not had any adverse side effects or diarhea from the giardia she has been battling for about a month. Should I be worried? |
Giardia is sometimes hard to get rid of. If your vet is actually seeing the cysts in her stools she probably has quite a few. At least you know that is what she has for sure. Many times the cysts don't even show up in a fecal exam. You actually never get rid of all of the cysts and they can become reactivated in times of stress. I would just continue with the flagyl - metronidazole. |
Try not to worry to much. I would keep an eye on her and if anything changes call the vet. |
Update Sissy continued with diarhea all through the 1st day, though she continued eating, drinking and playing normally. Yesterday, the 2nd day, she had bloody diarhea all throughout her room when I got her up in the morning. That was concerning enough, but then she refused to eat or drink anything and was beginning to get lethargic. I called and took her to the vet. She was in the beginnings of dehydration. She received IV hydration, an anti-inflammatory injection and her meds for giardia were changed to a broad spectrum to cover any potential bacteria. Within a couple hours of being at the vet, she perked right up. Today she is eating and drinking normally and no more diarhea! The vet thinks the giardia just went bizerk following the stress of having been boarded. It is such a relief to see her hyper little self again!! |
I'm so glad that she is felling better. It's so scary when they are sick. |
It is so good to hear she is better today. Yea Sissy- I hope she is 100% today. |
