Fever??? Quick Question. How can you tell if a dog has a fever if you don't have a thermometer for dogs??? Tucker suddenly feels very warm, and is acting odd. Thanks so much for any info |
There's really know way without a thermometer. One is always good to have around so I would just go buy one. Normal rectal temp for a dog is 101.5 degrees, but isn't considered a fever by most vets unless it is at least 103 degrees. |
ok, its just that his ears feel really hot. could that be a sign of a fever? |
Has he been outside? Is he panting? Are his gums a healthy pink color? If he is panting and his gums are either gray or dark red this could indicate heatstroke. I just felt all of mine's ears and they feel warm, but not hot. They are in an airconditioned home napping so they haven't been outside for a while. |
he hasn't been outside and hes not panting he just seems very tired and warm. his gums are the same color as tripps, a light pinkish color. but tripp seems perfectly normal. they are both napping now |
Keep an eye on him and do get a thermometer. He's probably fine, but could have an infection of some type. A dog's fever has to get pretty high (like 104.5 degrees) before it is considered an emergency situation. If he is, and continues, to run 103 or more for over 24 hours I would suspect he has an infection of some type his body is trying to "kill" and needs to see a vet. |

a dogs ears and stomach or any part of their body where there is less hair is usually going to feel warmer to you because a humans body temp is 98 degrees and a dogs is 101.5 normally. so your dog is naturally going to fee warmer to you. a thermometer is your best bet for catching a fever, but pale gums and lethergy are also signs of a possible fever. |
When Reuger didn't feel good I know that his nose felt warm and dry. It wasn't cool and moist like it usually is. |
I don't know what is going on... His nose feels normal he just feels very hot to the touch and is kinda out of it. He goes in for his liver shunt surgery on Thursday, so I'm hoping he cheers up. He may just be having a bad day, he is progressivly getting worse :(. I was just hoping there was some kind of way to tell if they had a fever without a thermometer. But I'm going to keep a close eye on him and hope he gets over it really soon. |
I didn't remember that your dog was the one with a liver shunt. His liver could definitely have an infection that is producing the fever. I would definitely go get a thermometer. If he is running a fever, I would call your vet first thing in the morning. He may need to be put on antibiotics before the surgery. |
Megan, How is little one doing? I hope he has perked up. You said he has is liver shunt surgery tomorrow. I will keep you all close in thoughts and prayer as this is a tough time. I do hope that he is feeling better as we havent seen an update, but I know how crazy things can get. We are thinking of you all!!! |
