Pancreatitis I'm devastated!
 

My Bentley was diagnosted yesterday with pancreatitis, he vomited few times in the morning with some diarrhea, took him to the vet, made the blood work and it showed is pancreatitis, the whole day was with the iv, then i took him to a hospital to stayed over night, and he still there, poor my baby he is so baby to be thru this, he is only 61/2 months. I ask the whys, they say could be so many things they don't know why, but this is killing me I feel so sad, can't stop crying, seeing him with that iv was horrible and leave him there was one of my biggest nightmares in life. I hope i can have him back tonight. He needs to be in a special diet for some days and with antibiotics.:animal-pa

I'm so sorry! Cali jas had several stays overnight and 48 hours atthe er vets. It is so hard but I asked them how she does and they say she is fine. Thaey said all the techs carry her around because she is sso little and cute. They really do get good care at these 24 hour vets. They also didn't mind when I called every 4 hours to check on her. As for the cause I would ask the vet what diet she needs and what to avaoid. I know fatty foods acan cause it.

yeah I call every 3 to 4 hours too, they said he is doing good and this and that, but just thinking about the cage where he is at and away from home is killing me. They said something about food giving can be the cause but Bentley just eats his food, so please people don't feed your dogs table food is bad for them. Noew Bentley is going to be on a diet call ID dor 10 days and then will see...:mad:

Great news!!! It's amazing what some fluids can do to get them feeling better. I know it is so hard to be away from them but Ido believe they are well taken care of.

I just read this thread. I am so sorry that your little one is going through this. Zeus also has been dealing with this for about the past 1 1/2 years and he has been doing great. We've only had one other minor episode since his diagnosis. He is on a strict diet of only Hills R/D food, no treats, and he has done very well. Anytime we think his tummy may be acting up, we just give him 1/2 a Pepcid AC twice a day, and that seems to do the trick. Good luck with everything and your baby should be just fine as long as you monitor his diet. :)

Thank you for your support.....he is doing good, and looks like nothing happing to him, but he is on a special diet too, 1 tsp of I/D every 2 hours, no treats, but he is active and alert.....

Glad to hear your baby is improving. Pancreatitis seems to be more frequently diagnosed than ever before....I sometimes wonder if the food we feed has anything to do with these illnesses...

I had 2 of mine have bouts with pancreatitis, one was in the vet's on IV's for 3 days, the other managed with just meds, but my vet told me that one thing that causes it is greasy foods. If you give your dog table foods, make sure they are not greasy. When I give mine some table scraps, I always mix them with their regular food so that they don't get any tummy troubles. Also, mine used to love those pig ears, but they are really greasy, so no more of them either.

I don't feed him table food. that's why I'm so wonder about it, I also think canbe their food I feed bentley Eukaneba, welll right now he is on a special diet,probably I will change the eukaneba when he gets better:aimeeyork

Zeus had never been fed table food either. We think it started with peanut butter. We used this as a treat for him and it was too much. Too much fat and protein for his digestive system. So, he is now on a low protein, high fiber diet and it seems to be working. :xfingers:

Wow I am sorry to hear about that. It makes me wonder if the food does have anything to do with it? I used to feed Eukanuba for 12 years then the last three years I went to Royal Canine, But most of my friends feed Iam's.

I am a new member and just found out two days ago that my baby has pancreatitis. I was/am so upset. He was on an IV yesterday and seems all right today but refuses to eat the special diet I/D food. I am now making him some rice with chicken breast...suggested by his doctor. I feel so miserable. Will he feel better? Does this disease go away?

Thanks God Bentley likes the I/D....I think if they eat something greasy or bad they'll get it again....

So sorry to hear about your little one getting pancreatitis. My little Buddy had pancreatitis in March/April. He was in the hosptial twice with an IV also. He is now eating Royal Canine Duck & Potato dry dog food. The vet also gave me some canned Royal Canine Duck Formula and he LOVES it. He CANNOT have any other foods besides a Cherrio or Rice Krispie for a treat. When he was sick, I was VERYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY scared. He seemed so sick and there was nothing I could do for him. I was a nervous wreck. His vet, Dr. Angie, was so good to us.

It is a challenge for us to keep him away from people food. He is so sneaky and he tries every which way to get at food if we drop it by accident. Also, other people DO NOT understand when we tell them that he can't have anything but his own dog food. Trying to explain it to others is pointless...they really don't understand because they haven't seen our little Buddy is the terrible condition he was in, nor have they seen the thousands of dollars in vet bills we've had. So, I have just started telling people that if he eats any other food other than his prescribed food, that he could die...which is true. I have actually had to yell at friends and family because they think I am kidding. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Hi, sure hope your little one is doing ok now. It is scarey when they get sick. I had to put Baby Blessing on the rice and chicken breast a month ago, the vet and we seemed to think the episode was from a bad batch of dry dog food (first feeding from a new bag) since then she don't want to eat dry dog food :( she gets her puppy teeth out next Wendsday (mama is a nervous wreck on that one) so hoping then she will go back to eating the other brand of dry dog food we got. Please keep us posted on how your little one is doing. Glad you found YT, this is a wonderful site. How old is your baby?

i am wondering how your little one is doing? its been some time since you posted his illness with Pancreatitis.
were you told it could recurr? i JUST found out yesterday my little elliott has it, hes in the hospital now. I am so worried about this, anything you can share is sure appreciated, and i hope your little baby is doing much better,

Hi Sharon~ My Max had pancreatitis a couple of years ago. At the time, he was a couple of lbs overweight (not much exercise and used to get bits of this or that from us....no more of that though). He just stopped eating and was vomiting. It was very scary. I took him to the ER clinic on a Friday night and he had to stay at the vet hospital over the weekend with an IV. I was so scared b/c I couldn't even go visit him. I brought him home on an antibiotic, some Reglan, and a new diet (Hill's W/D). He hasnt' had one single problem since then. You just have to make sure that he doesn't get any fatty foods and your vet will tell you what food is best for him.

It's amazing how sick they can be, but they really do well with the treatment! The Reglan is a med that helps food move thru the GI tract, so it's helpful after they've been without food for a couple of days, but it made Max hallucinate, so the vet stopped it.

I know that it can be a chronic thing, but I think for most dogs, it's more of a rare occasion, esp. if you watch their diet. Good luck to you and feel free to PM me about it if you like. There's a lot of other people here who have also gone thru it! Let us know how he's doing!!!

My pup Sophie suffered for years, and it is very important to have a blood panel to see the protein levels, change of diet and is also induced by stress.

I am so sorry, I know he is probably better now, but I wanted to mention your food your feeding is what is a huge problem. Check the bag for the high crude fat and high crude protein. Most dog foods have way to much for our small dogs. It killed mine. I didn't know. I was even feeding her a dog food "made" for yorkies. I called the company and told them, they said they new what they were doing and said it's fine. So what do you do? Anyway, to calm the tummy down when it starts churning I also give about a teaspoon to a tablespoon of yogurt. They love it. It's very calming to their system. Look up on the internet "yogurt for dogs".
