breathing problems My yorkshire terrier is 8 years old and last night started to have breathing difficulties, she is snorting liquid through her nose and is breathing through her mouth with a blue colored tounge, she fainted twice, we brought her to the vet but he did not know what the problem was?? This happened one other time about six week age. Please give advice on what steps to take next. She has settled a bit this morning. Martin |
Martin welcome to YT. I really don't have any advise of what can be wrong :( but wanted to tell you that I will have her in my thoughts and prayers :hands: . Good luck. Please keep us posted how she is doing. IF you can, i will love to see a pic of your girl. :ghug: |
I have a 9 year old pom who 2 weeks ago who had water bubbling from her nose and was breathing funny. I took her in and they checked her lungs and did blood work at my request because she hasn't had any in a long time and also had sores on her neck and chin. They said they couldn't find anything wrong on her nose problem, all her blod work was perfect except her white cells which they thought was due to her skin infections I have to repeat her CBC in 4 weeks. They gave me oral antibiotics for that and told me to give her benadryl for the nose thing. It stopped after a couple of days and she's been fine since. They thought it might be an allergic reaction. Hope yours feels better soon. |
If I were in your position, I would probably seek a second oppinion by a different vet, becouse it sounds pretty serious if shes actually passing out at times, like shes not getting enough oxygen mabie. I hope everything works out for her, and she turns out ok. We'll keep her in our prayers, and please keep us posted as to her condition. |
blue tongue definately means she's not getting enough oxygen. did he check for a collapsed trach? maybe she's just developed it. I remember when we had an old bichon come in for this problem and had never had problems breathing before. with him, he had a collapsing trach and had a small cyst growing on it that was blocking his air way when he got too excited. it was really hard to feel for so maybe your vet missed something on his exam. i would recommend another opinion and don't let her get too excited about things becuase that's probably when she'll have the breathing problems |
I would get a second opinion she doesnt sound like shes doing too good. Good luck I hope she gets better soon |

Oh my! I agree with everyone - GET A SECOND OPINION!!! The first thing I thought of was a collapsed trachea. I would ask for x-ray, bloodwork, thorough exam of everthing (neck, lungs, etc). You are in our thoughts and prayers - please keep us posted! |
Blue tongue is definitely an emergency situation it could be because something is caught in her throat or an allergic reaction has made her throat swell. I can't believe your vet sent you away without an answer. I would immediately take her to another vet - I doubt you have much time left. |
It is interesting that she had this episode at 8 years of age - and had a similar episode when she was only six weeks old. I wouldn't even guess what is causing this - but, wouldn't it be wonderful if she doesn't experience this again for another 8 years. Watch her for a day or two since she seems to have settled down. And - if she returns to normal - it's likely a vet won't be able to diagnose any problem. Let's just hope she gets back to normal and stays there for a long time again. Good luck - let us know if you find any reason or cause for this. Carol Jean |
You need a second opinion Is your vet really aware of the problems of small dogs? I would question them about collapsed trachea and see what they actually know about it. Do your research here in the search function, and go armed and ready. Also, call around and try to find a vet who sees a lot of yorkies. They will know what's up. Good luck, and come back and let us know how it all turns out!:( Poor little one... |
Its the blue tounge that has me worried. She isn\'t getting enough oxygen that is for sure.... I\'d get to a vet asap with her. Keep us updated...sending you a hug and prayers for her.. |
Oh how awful and I hope we get an update on this little yorkie - that doesn\'t sound good at all - :( GOOD LUCK to you martin...I would def try another vet - that sounds very serious to me also.... |
