Reggie Vomitting a Little Blood Reggie didn't eat yesterday afternoon and threw up food plus what looked like a small amount of blood. Since the "blood" could have been his treat sausage, we decided to monitor him. He was drinking water last night and this morning although he continued to throw up mucus and small flecks of blood. This morning he had diarrhea that smelled extremely foul and threw up a couple more times so I took him to the emergency vet. Since Parvo has been rampant in our area, the vet tested Reggie but it was negative. He couldn't find any indications that Reggie had an obstruction either. The vet gave Reggie a shot of some antihistamine (he said to quiet Reggie and help him sleep and let his tummy calm down). He also gave me some antibiotics (Albon) to start giving Reggie once a day in case he has a bacteria. Anyone have an experience like this that can shed some light on what might be wrong? Reggie has been sleeping (restlessly) and refuses water. I'm worried. Reggie is 5 months old and weighs about 5.5 pounds. Please say a prayer for my little guy and I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions. Ruth :( |
Well- my girl had this two weeks ago- but not really diarrhea- just very soft. When she threw up with blood flecks in it I took her to the Vet. They couldn't find anything wrong with her either. Just gave her a shot for nausea and an antibiotic. He said no food for one day, get pedialtyte for fluid and then if she was ok start her on soft food for a day and then regular food. I don't what it was but she is fine now. I hope your little boy is better by the time you read this. |
Cali had what sounds like the same thing, she started with throwing up and then the diahrrea, I took her to the ER vet where they thought it was an obstruction by the way the Xray looked they kept her Iv'd her and ended up doing surgery that night for possible obstruction. They spayed her and did liver and stomach biopsies. It appears the stomach issues were just viral and she got over it. Hopefully Reggie will get better quickly. The Albon works pretty fast. I will pray he igets better soon. |
I don't have any advice. I just wanted to wish him well, hope he gets better soon. |
Georgie has thrown up before and has also had diarrahea. The vet also gave him Arbon and it worked like a charm. I am sure Reggie will be back up to speed in no time. Georgie and I will say a prayer from him and you |
I also meant to post to please keep us updated on him;) |
I have no advice...sorry. Just wanted to wish him well. Good luck! |
:( Yes, we have gone through the same thing here???? Yogi, our 13 month old male began a week ago with diarrhea for 2 days and then started having bloody diarrhea. We took him in to the Vet. He gave him a shot of antibiotics because he had a little temp also., then 2 days later, he started vomiting mucus with blood in it, at 4:00 in the morning, called the Vet, took him in at 7:00 and he then gave him an injection of an anitnausea med and changed his antibiotic, put him on a different food. He was better for 4 days then started vomiting again 3 times in a row, I just waited it out with making sure he was still drinking fluids and he was fine???? Dori our female of 18 months started vomiting 4 days after Yogi started , I took her right after she vomited the first time and the Vet went ahead to treat her with the same meds. He said they can get viruses and intestinal bacterial infections just like we do, they are just a little more sensitive than us with the irritation symtoms like the bloody stools and vomit. THey are both fine now. Never got a "for sure" diagnosis. I trust my Vet, have known him for 20 years. Hope your little one is doing better now??? |
Much Better!! Thanks for all your prayers. After sleeping all day from the shot the vet gave him, Reggie woke up around dinner time, and wants to eat. I gave him a little chicken baby food, and then we went to my in-laws where he proceeded to eat some of their dogs dry food. He was bouncing and running around like his old self. I'm keeping a close watch, but so far, everything seems to be staying in him. Thank you all for your help. It makes it easier when there are people who have been through this. It helps keep me from worrying quite so much. Have a nice night everyone! Ruth:) |
I'm so glad he's getting back to normal. I know how worrisome it is. You watch their every move to see if they seem better or worse. |
I'm sure your vet wants to see your dog again if there isn't any improvement. Blood always scares me - but time and time again, it has proven not to be serious. My pup went to the bathroom last week - and there was quite a bit of blood. It was the first time that ever happened.....but, the next day he was back to normal and has been every since. Plus he never acted sick in any way at the time. So, whatever it was has come and gone. I wish you the best of luck -- hopefully, this problem will solve itself and not return. Carol Jean |
