How long does kennel cough last?? Stanley's had kennel cough ever since I took him home almost a month ago..I didn't know what it was at first and I took him to the vet a week and a half ago. He's been on antibiotics since then. I honestly can't tell whether or not it's getting better. It is so bad at night sometimes that I can't sleep and I just stay up to try and comfort him. Does this mean that the antibiotics aren't working? Also, when he coughs it makes this sound like he's going to spit something out but he always ends up swallowing back down. Is there any way to get him to spit it out..it's like a white gooey substance. |
Straszny struggled with this for a couple of months. I felt so hopeless, bouncing from one antibiotic to the next. He was went through 3 or 4 antibiotics, and one finally worked. The vet said that it just depends on the pup which antibiotic works for them, and if there was one that ALWAYS worked, he said they would always prescribe it. Anyway, there is light at the end of the tunnel... |
Mickey had kennel cough when I first got him too. He got so sick I thought I was going to lose him, but after after an ER visit, several antibiotics, and nebulizing, he finally got over it. It probably took a month for him to be back to normal. The nebulizing made him a lot more comfortable, and i was told even bringing him in the bathroom when you shower ( the steam) will help. Good luck. It takes time, but I hope he gets well soon. |
My understanding of kennel cough is that it is viral and antibiotics are only given to prevent secondary infections. The pup's immune system must overcome the virus. I would talk to the vet about boosting his immune system with Vitamin C and Echinacea or looking for an over the counter supplement that says immune system booster. I would also be giving him 1/2 tsp. of yogurt with meals to help establish good bacteria levels that the antibiotics are killing. |
Cali had it when I got her and gave it to my pom and they had it for over 3 months and 3 series of antibiotics and it just went away on it's own. I just had her lungs checked every so often to make sure she didn't develop a bacterial infection. It will go away it just takes time. |
