What would cause this cough?? 9 month old male, he only coughs when he is relaxing- getting ready to take a nap or go to sleep for the night. He doesn't cough during the day, during periods of excitement or play. Only when he is settling down for a nap. The cough can sometimes be the honking type, non productive and it only happens for a little bit. Mostly it's kind of like he "huffs" several times. Maybe for approximately 2-3 minutes while he is getting settled down, then it may happen 2-3 times during the course of the night. No other symptoms- he doesn't sound raspy when he breathes or appear to feel bad in any way. What could it be? I have never experienced kennel cough or collapsed trachea- so I am wondering if either of those that might be involved? Allegies or a cold? A vet visit is planned, but in the mean time.... Any ideas what could be causing this? |
It could be kennel cough, it sounds like when my two had it. It was always at night or naptime. I would have a vet check it out. I hope he gets better soon. |
Sounds very similar to Topher's cough that he had a few months ago. It would only 'act up' when he was settling down to sleep or rest, or when he was running or playing hard. I took him to the vet and lo and behold he diagnosed him with tonsillitis. He put him on an antibiotic for 14 days and it cleared up perfectly. The vet recommended that I give him a teaspoon of honey before bed, to help his tender throat. This really helped to ease the pre-sleep coughing. I'd definitely take him to the vet to get it checked out. It could be one of many things so it would be best to err on the side of caution and have it looked at as soon as you can. |
I kinda have the same problem with my puppy.. Tiny.. I am very worried that the vets may have something to do with it. I have talked to my breeder and she has already told me that she has no problem giving me another dog or refunding the money..But I don't think thats its her problem...Tiny has been coughing alot when he drinks or gets to playing...But some have told me that he's to young to be diagnosed with Callapsed Trachea. He is turning 6 months on May 21 , 2006. I talked to the breeder and she told me that it comes from Mommy and Daddy but there is absolutley nothing wrong with the parents...Mommy is a show dog and has won quite a bit..I am juts wondering what you guys think about this situation...She also told me that when I took him to get fixed they might have put toooo big of a tub in him when his surgery took place.. Any comments of suggegstions would be wonderful...Thanks:aimeeyork |

The only thing they did was check his throat and check his breathing...No swabing of the mouth...no blood work...nothing...just some antibotics and said come back in two weeks if not any better... |
I'm just wondering what hte normal signs are for collapsed trachea and can they catch it at such a young age? |

Chachi may have a good point too- kennel cough- has he been checked for that? He could have even picked it up at the vet when he was there... Fortunately my little guys cough went away after a few days. I guess it was just a cold or maybe allergies... |
