constipation or diarrhea? Good Morning -- I am hoping someone can provide just a little advice....I am a new yorkie mom (one week). I got a 9 week old ppuppy last Friday...everything has been great, the vet said he was perfect! unfortunately this morning each time he has tried to poo poo he whines and has difficulty...he finally goes, but it takes him a while. I assumed he was constipated and called the vet...they told me he actually had diarrhea? I hate to question my vet, but my husband doesn't believe it either. We were instructed to pull up his food that we had been giving him and for 24 hours put him on a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice and/or boiled hamburger and also give him pumpkin? Any experienced owners who can provide some reassurance would be great. Thank you |
Yorkie puppies are prone to having dried pieces of feces on their little behinds. when this happens it actually pulls their hair (ouch) while they are trying to go. Make sure you keep his little bottom clean. as for diarrhea being the cause, i would vote no, but i didn't go to veterinary school. |
Was the stool formed or runny? The chicken, rice and pumpkin diet would be beneficial for constipation or diarrhea so i think that's good advice. |
Thank you for your resonse. The stool was hard...actually I almost thought it was a piece of mulch! He loves to go outside and dig and chew on the mulch. my daughter and I tried to get it..yuk...using a puppy wipe to pull it and we got some of it and then decide to put him in a bath to soften...taht helped some more and at least there was nothing else hanging. I am just so upset when he tries to go and whimpers and has such a hard time. So, don't mean to sound dumb, but the pumpkin he should get by istelf and the chicken and rice together right? |
The Pumpkin needs to be the kind without spices in it and I always made a plate with the chicken and rice on one side and the pumpkin on the other..mainly because if they wouldn't eat one of them I wanted to know. Also what kind of mulch do you have down - some are very harmful to a dog. It sounds to me also that your little one is constipated. Did you tell the vet office what you had to do to get it out? Well my best advise is to keep him out of the mulch, do the chicken & rice with the pumpkin. |
keep him away from the mulch and keep a close eye on him. you may want to add a 1/2 tsp. of olive oil over his food (once a day for no more than one week) to help with lubrication if his stools are that hard, make sure he's drinking plenty of water and you may even want to add water in his food. |
My breeder advised me give the puppies lots of water and put a pinch of Metamucil on my puppies food for constipation, and Pedialite with their water for diarrhea. Break the Metamucil capsule in half to get to the powder inside. If the puppies are not drinking a lot, she told me to put water in their syringe and force it down their throat if necessary. I went through both conditions with both my yorkie pups, and tried the advise and it worked well for them. |
metamucil is basically fiber so the canned pumpkin would be the same, only natural. |
Thank you all for your responses, I truly appreciate it! Good news...pumpkin, chicken and rice and one more tablespoon of pumpkin and we have poop! He got up from a nap a little while ago and went to his pad and went with no whimpering! The entire family was excited. He was definately constipated. In regards to the mulch...any advice on how to keep him out of it or make it less attractive? I don't let him play in it, but we go outside for some fresh air and he runs right for it....I take him out and to the middle of the yard and he runs right back. We go back and forth and do this several times before he will finally stay out, but it's what we go through each time we go outside. Thanks again to all of you for your time. I can see that this site will be a great way to obtain excellent advice and reassurance. :-) |
we actually have been adding water to his food...I was feeding him Pro Plan for puppies - mixing canned with a little dry (both Pro Plan) and adding a little water each time. It's one of the reason I was so surprised that he could have been constipated. Could it be the food? Should I try something else or just try and reintroduce the same food after 24 hours of chicken and rice? |
Yea - this is great news. Okay now on to the mulch. Do you know what kind of mulch you have down? I hope it is not cocoa beans as this is especially toxic to a dog. http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer...licationscocoa You might try spraying bitter apple (petsmart has it) if he always goes to certain spots but what I would do is get him other outside toys so he is not even interested in the mulch. I would also have him on a leash and work with him on not going to that area. Yorkies love soccer balls and maybe you can play with one outside. Take his focus away from the mulch. |
I don't think the ProPlan caused it but there are better foods out there if this continues. Here is a thread you might find informative. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...rcial+dog+food |
I'm not sure about what kind of mulch it is...I will ask my husband in the morning (he is asleep). I am working on the leash thing...that is apparently going to take some time! :-) We put the harness and the leash on and he just trys to to chew on it....but I figure I have to put it on for a few minutes each day to get him used to it. Soccer huh? Okay, I will try an outside toy. Thank you. |
Also make sure you have some nice treats for him when you are outside. Everytime he goes for the mulch call him and gently pull on his leash bringing him to you and then give him a little treat. This is great training anyways to train him to come to you when you call. Glad you didn't wake up your husband :p |
I have some treats that we are using for potty training, guess I can use those for "mulch" training as well. hehe Thanks again. |
