Need your help ASAP

Well first of all I have to say a big thank you to everyone at YT today, I truely believe that you guys saved our Nelly last night. I guess Nelly got a little over stressed from the day, got a little chill by going to the park and not eating enough caused her to start to have tremors and she slowly started to get very tired. First I thought it was just a chill from going to the park but as we got home they got worst and she could not stand up or eat or basically do anything. Then I remembered people talking about hypoglycemia and low blood sugar levels so I grabbed the honey and phoned the vet emergency right away, apparently her blood sugar was just hitting five when I was at the vet which according to the vet was low considering she was after having the honey she said it should have spiked it to be about 7-9 so it must have been really low. So on to my ASAP question, she doing alot better this morning but the vet gave me a can of their dog food but it is giving Nelly a little runny poop so what can I give her to help her, should I just give her the dry which she has been always eating or should I give her some healthy human food, after this incident I might switch her to all healthy human food, at least I know she will eat becaused she is not to fond of the dog food anyway, so any suggestion get typing guys I really need you today.

I know it is long but had to tell you how grateful I am for all the info I get from here.

How old is she? you could just put honey or karo syrup over her dry food, or in her water. I put syrup in Ollie's water untill she was 12 weeks, and I give her cottage cheese or scrambled eggs once a day.

I'm guessing the low sugar incident is because she was away from her food for too long.

Nelly is 8 1/2 months old and this was her first incident, would giving her egg for her breakfast be OK, she loves them and it has been awhile since she had one.

She seems a little old to be having juvenile hypoglycemia so there may be an underlying health problem. There's not a special diet for low blood sugar. It's just important that they eat several times a day and do not get overly tired, cold or stressed. I would go buy some nutrical or nutristat and give it to her 2 or 3 times a day for a while, then reduce to 1 or 2 times a day. If the new food is causing her stools to be loose I wouldn't think that would be good for her. Eggs are fine, chicken or hamburger with rice and vegetables is also good. Karo is better than honey because honey may contain bacteria (you shouldn't give honey to babies under a year old). You can add Karo in their drinking water (change it at least once a day, preferably twice). If she has another severe reaction you can also place a small amount of Karo in her rectum for faster absorption.

I agree she is too old to be getting hypoglycemia, but she might, if she didn't eat before you left. So you might want to make sure she has eaten before you take her out, and take something along for her that you know she will eat.

Sure hope Nelly is going to be all fine real soon, for the runny loose stool, I always cooked some white rice and gave just a little bit in with her dry food. Ours liked the rice. Gotta be careful that you don't over give too much rice as it will do the opposite, I did that once :( anyway this is what I have always done for the loose stool problem. I finally got Baby Blessing onto
the Royal Canine 33 small breed puppy food, tried everything else and this finally worked for her. I did read something about that there might be a problem with Nutro, I sure hope not. We used that brand for so many years and raised our other Yorkie on that but our new one went through all the best brands and finally :happyboun yippee the RC33 made a hit with her much to our delight. Please keep us posted on Nelly's progress, have you posted any pictures yet in the gallery. I love to visit the gallery. Have a nice day. Patti and ~~Baby Blessing~~ :) :)

Nelly seems to be doing fine except for the runny poop, the vet did say that it seems like it might have been just a one time incident seeing she did not have it before. I guess being over to grandma's which their was quite a crowd there then at the park with all the kids just overstressed her. She is coming back to her old self again but we are keeping a very close eye on her from now on. How many of you give human food for one meal and dry for the other, I am considering this at least then I know she is getting at least one full good meal a day. This incident last night really scared all of us so we are willing to do anything to keep it from happening. Even if it means giving healthy human food all the time.

Cali has had 5-6 episodes of Hypoglycemia the most recent at 8 months. She is now 10 months. Anytime she doesn't eat or is stressed out I give her a little Nutrical. I also give her chicken and hamburger with a little wet dog food. I am using missing link supplement to give her better nutrition. She loves to eat now shich wasn't the case before, so I feed her what she will eat.

sandraj 04-17-2006 03:13 PM

I feed my pup kibble for breakfast and it is out all day for her to nibble on.She usually gets people food for dinner-cooked chicken, liver-just a little--hamburger mince,or a raw chicken neck. When we go out for a long walk i take her puppy kibble and she eats quite a bit as we go.If we meet other dog people it is a reward for saying hello nicely and not jumping up.She eats lots when we are out-must need the energy. She has never has a low blood suger incident despite being tiny-3lbs at 5 months.

Annie&Badger 04-17-2006 03:22 PM

That's pretty much what I do with Badger. I wouldn't overload her system with complex food combinations to be honest. In principle it sounds like a good idea to give her human food but the balance needs to be right because they're on such low calories anyway so you want to pack in as much vitamins and stuff which the pre-prepared canine food will have. I give him Royal Canin twice a day and then two other meals of just boiled chicken or turkey (small quantities for two other meals). He also has little chicken or lamb treats when he's out walking. It's more important I think to feed her more frequently to maintain the blood sugar than it is in the type of food. Good luck anyway. I'm glad she's okay :)

My dogs get some wet food in the morning - which they will eat because they are hungry. They have dry dog food out 24/7 -- which they nibble a little on if they get hungry - they really don't like it.

In the evening - they get healthy people food - chicken, other meats, cheese, (leftovers) ---- whatever is healthy and good for them. They like almost everything, and I give them a wide variety - different foods all the time.

So - my dogs do get both - dog food and people food. They are both happy, healthy, playful, and not overweight.

If I were asked - I'd have to say their favorite food in the world is "chicken."

my breeder said to put maple surup on a spoon and give it to Daisy if her blood sugar gets low. What signs do I look for? When I got home last night she was playful for abut 45 min then fell asleep then got up again an hour later for 45 min and I gave her a little honey (the breeder also said that was ok) and then she fell asleep right after that for about 7 hours. Is this normal?

she is 6 and a half weeks

With her being that young, i would be offering very wet food 5 times a day. puppies are like babies they sleep a lot and not letting them go too long without food and not letting them get overly tired will prevent hypoglycemia. i would purchase some nutrical or nutristat and give it to her 2 or 3 times a day - it has more than just sugar in it and would probably be good since she is so young. if you notice it causing diarrhea, reduce it to once a day.

out of 5 Yorkies all about 4 pounds at maturity, only 1 had hypoglycemia. she actually had seizures and would just fall over and act drunk.

here's an article about hypoglycemia that gives the symptoms
