Diagnosing kennel cough?? Last night Jaxon started having a terrible sounding cough so I took him to the vet today. I'm a fairly new Yorkie owner and worry about him so much! Anyway, the vet took a look at him, couldn't get him to cough, took his temperature (which was normal) and felt it was kennel cough based on the way I described it. I'm wondering if this is how other Yorkies have been diagnosed as well?? He's had kind of runny poops since yesterday and hasn't been eating his canned food at all. He is starting Clavamox (amoxicillan) for 7 days, plus they also gave me Torbutrol tablets for the cough, just on an as needed basis. Just wondering if this sounds like what you've been through? I hate to medicate him if it's not really needed. He is 6 months and 3.5 lbs. |
How long have you had him? If you have had him for awhile has he been anywhere he could have been exposed to Kennel cough? Cali had it when I got her at 9 weeks and gave it to my 9 year old pom. It took them over 3 months to get rid of it. They acted fine they just had the cough. I hope you baby is better soon. |
Well, here's what I'D do anyway... If he's in the beginning phases of K.C and the vet couldn't massage his throat and illicit a cough, that's pretty normal. The massaging technique is typically to show that the trachea is irritated and there should be other signs. Honestly, to me it sounds like that could be the case- since he's also got a loose stool. What was his temperature? I'm not a vet, just someone who's experienced w/ a kennel environment and all the ailments that go w/ it. Keep an eye on him (of course) and I would absolutely give him the medicine if that's what your vet says to do. If he were my dog, however...I'd actually wait a few more days to see if his symptoms progress. Your call. This is just my opinion! |
My oldest one had kennel cough and I spent sooooo much on vet bills b/c I was worried. It kept getting worse so I almost took her back to where I bought her to have them nurse her back to health. What I was told was that K.C. was like a cold...you cant treat it...it just has to run its course. They said to just give her Robitussen and that should help. All of the prescription medicines weren't working b/c they were treating a bacterial and K.C. is viral (or is it the other way around). Anyway the vet was going to start getting x-rays and much more expensive treatment when I finally stopped everything and just used cough meds. It seemed to do the trick. I dont know all of the small details about K.C. so hopefully I dont get too many ppl correcting this post. I just know what worked for my baby. |
We've had Jaxon since mid January and this was the first time he's had such a harsh cough. He often comes into contact with other dogs - Petsmart, occassionally doggie daycare, plus our neighbour has a lab. We were supposed to start obedience last night but didn't go because of the cough. His temperature at the vet yesterday was 102. He didn't have the cough overnight and his poops were back to normal today, plus his appetite is better. I know when I've had a major cough, the doctor can't give you anything because it's viral and they have you let it run it's course. Guess I'm wondering if KC is viral too, then why the medication?? Sounds like so many owners here have re-occuring KC - maybe it's something more and the meds are just prolonging it???? I gave him the amoxicillan last night - he didn't like it and I had to quickly shoot it down. I haven't used the Torbutrol tabs yet. My husband is a doctor and he is somewhat opposed to just giving Jaxon medication. Guess we're a little overprotective but just want the best for our little guy. ;) |
