Coccidiosis back...uugghhh! Well, here we go again. My little guys is VERY sick again. My daughter (12 yars old) woke me up this morning telling me that the puppy was not well at all. He had bloody diarrhea in the night and threw up as soon as I got to him. He is VERY lethargic now and I am constantly checking his breathing. I am really concerned he won't make it. Just for everyone's future reference...coccidiosis takes about 13 days to show it's ugly head. This was important to me because it first showed up in this pup after I had him for only 4 days...which means that he had it when I got him. Thought it was cleared up after two days in puppy hospital (I.V. etc) and medication 2x day for the last week and 1/2. He was going strong...then yesterday I thought he was acting funny....overly lazy. For those of you that aren't sure what coccidiosis is go on to google and look it up. Very common in littler pups, like Yorkies. Wish us luck and hopefully we'll have good news later. |

That is some really bad stuff. Oscar had it...the vet said his was a level 2 out of 4. I knew what to look for and when I saw the mucous in his stool...we rushed to the vet and caught it in time. He told me that the tiny ones can go downhill really fast. I kept Frosted Cheerios for Oscar when he was that age and pumped them to him when I thought he was not eating enough. The vet put him on Albon for 10 days and it cleared right up with no recurrence. We will be thinking of your little guy today...hope he feels better soon! |
All I can say is thank God for Albon. It really does work wonders once they are on it. It has saved many a rescue and yes we have had it come back also. Luckily the vet gave me a large supply. |

Poor baby...Chanel came to us with that also and once it was cleared up she was fine but it sounds like you need to get medical attention asap....If it's bad enough you're checking breathing...please see the vet !!! I hope he feels better ...that's an awful illness but treatable |
Okay...update. Get to vet at 8:00 (when they open) and vet takes him straight back. His body temp is 91....can you believe that? 91! His temp was normal here at the house before I took the 25 min ride to the vets office. Anyway, sugar WAS low...34...crazy huh? I gave him nutrical last night but I couldn't get him to swallow anything this morning. So, talked to vet at about 2:30 and she said he's alert and doing well. 50% dextrose in the jugular did wonders. Also, NO coccidia in the fecal exam. Vet is worried about liver shunts. Can anyone fill me in on the symptoms of shunts? I am totally amazed that this dog is alive at all. He had a seizure on me on the way to the vets this morning and I thought for sure he wouldn't make it. He's a real fighter, that's for sure. Please though, someone tell me about shunts. Thanks for all thoughts and prayers. Please keep my little girl in your prayers too...she is so torn up over this....and now I have to say to her that he MIGHT be better, but he may have shunts and may not make it. Thanks for any help. |
We are so sorry to hear Gibber is ill again, we followed you with his illness before and was so thankful when he got through all that. I believe Gibber is a little trooper and with all the TLC from a loving family such as you all, I know he is going to fight like heck to beat this bout whatever is going on. Hang in there and keep positive thoughts, my daughter always said to me when I would think negative, " Mom, thats stinkin thinkin" I will be keeping Gibber in my prayers and glad you got him into the vet right away, it sounds like you have a good vet there. My Lacy had seizures with hypoglycemia even though she was on nutrical. She eventually outgrew both around 3 or 4 months old. I'll say a prayer for your little one. Keep us informed. |
How did you determine that Lacy was hypo and did not have shunts? That's the question I have for the vet. She, the vet, is doing a bile acids test and will have the results tomorrow. I guess what I don't understand is why did the pup do so well for the two weeks after initial treatment (for coccidiosis) and then lapse? If a liver shunt is present then why and/or how did the puppy thrive for 2 weeks with absolutely NO symptoms? I will admit that it is odd he hasn't gained an ounce of weight in 2 weeks...stuck at 1.7lbs. He ate like a horse, a small one, but a horse nonetheless. Where did all that food go? His bowel movements were normal in number and consistency was good. I am flumoxed and I realize I am asking a lot of questions that can't be answered clinically...but anybody that has anything to add it would be greatly appreciated. Especially if your dog has/had shunts. Thanks in advance. |
How old is the puppy? And did the breeder say that he/she has had any problem with Liver Shunt in her litters before? It is unfortunately very common with Yorkies - especially when they are so small. It does seem fairly common that Yorkies do well for a while after treatment and then relapse - it seems to be a common thread around here - or it could be that the stress of treatment causes other things. I am hoping for the best for you and your little one! |
They did a glucose level test which showed her blood sugar to be very low. The vet never suspected liver shunt - maybe because she was gaining weight. I was giving her Gerber Baby Food meat. She was a fat little roly poly! Of course, if your baby does have liver shunt the high protein in the baby jar meat would not be good. I think the bile test should give you a pretty good idea if your baby has liver shunt. I'm like you I don't understand why the puppy would do so well for a couple of weeks, but the non-weight gain doesn't sound good. Keep us posted on the test results.
