8 weeks old and I think something is wrong!!! HELP!!! Hello Yorkie lovers, I am a little worried about my new baby girl.. MIA (8 weeks old). She is real good about the pad training!!! ... but every time she goes for a nap... she gets up and there is always a wet spot... pipi spot!!! She also pipi's soooo often... sometimes her urine is clear... is something wrong??? thank you in advance... waiting on your response  |
She is very young Your baby is very young. She should still be nursing with her mother. Anyway, little ones can't hold it that long. Place a pad closer to her nap area. She can only hold it about an hour or two. She may be excited, or drinking a lot. I'm sure it's ok, but watch her water intake. Have a lot of patience. They get much better with training at age 4-6 months. Write a list of questions or concerns for her next visit to the vet. Good Luck! |
Now, I've heard of this happening and when they took their pup in to be checked, vet called it a "lazy bladder". Can't remember if there was anything they did for her but you may call your vet and find out. |
She is very young, I place my pups at 10 weeks. That 2 weeks can make a big difference. Though I have found wet spots where my puppies are sleeping. I have noticed that puppies are not good housekeepers. They tend to sleep on anything, it is their Mommy or us that keeps them dry & clean. Doesn't hurt to ask the Vet, she should be receiving some Vaccinations soon anyway. As long as their is no blood or a strong odor. I would just keep an eye on her, ask the Vet at her next check up. Isn't she precios though, love Yorkies...... :luvu: |
I would put my money on her being very young. |
When mine were that young they didnt have any bladder control |
Thank you Yorklovers!!! Thank you Yorklovers!!! |
I really don't think eight weeks for a puppy is that young to be honest. There must be a reason that most breeders in the UK send them out at eight weeks... and I'm sure it's not because we're 'irresponsible' or 'misinformed' here. Badger came to me at nine weeks and he stopped weaning at seven so I'm not sure why so many people keep insisting that anything under 12 weeks is too young. The imperative stages for a puppy's socialisation are between eight and twelve weeks anyway so surely they should be in their prospective home with their prospective owner at this critical stage |
I understand your opinion and respect it. Yet through my hands on rearing puppies, I find the Dam is a very important Teacher. During the 8 - 10 week Socializing Skills are taught by the Dam first. This is my hands on experience breeding my Yorkies. My last litter I had both Sire & Dam to teach the pups. All of my new Families thought my puppies were well trained at such a young age. No problems with adjustment. At 8 weeks, puppies are capable of surviving. |
Okay. That sounds eminently sensible. I'm just interested to know, if it seems so obvious a reason to keep them according to American standards, then why would UK breeders be okay with them leaving at eight weeks. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't do that as a rule if it was detrimental to the puppies in any way... And I don't think my puppy was just surviving at eight weeks. He seemed fully capable of learning and playing and everything when I got him... |
Puppies at 8 weeks are weaned and are eating on their own. That is what I meant by surviving. I just have experienced that at the of 10 weeks, the puppies have had the Social Skills taught by the Dam and or Sire. Then again all puppies are different. |
this is all very interesting! Sorry we get off track a little. Back to the pee troubles. A call to the vet may help to ease your mind a litttle bit. Best of luck! Sure everything is fine! |

When we first got our "late" yorkie, at 8 weeks. We allowed her to sleep in our bed with us and she would, litterally, wet the bed, in her sleep. We woke up more than once to wet pillows. I think it is just immaturity and she will outgrow it. |
Thank you all Thank you ... I did call the vet and it IS normal... she will get better at holding it. thank you so much.... I love reading the threads... Kate |
