after the vet visit :animal36 The vet sd the tracheal wash was a success. It was a good swab. It showed 3 resistant bacteria. It seems when we would treat with 1 antibiotic, 1 would get worse and 2 better, and when we switched to the others, vice versa. She is very optimistic that we have the right one now. There are some side effects but not major ones. It could though affect her bones temporarily or make her teeth colored. it is Doxycycline. I told her I was talking to someone whose yorkie had the same symptoms. She sd she recommended the wash. Sometimes they can not get a good swab, so we were lucky. My baby may be getting better. :animal36 |
Thanks J Thank you for the update. I will make the appointment for the wash and mention the antibiodic to my vet. Keep us posted on Gypsy's progress. That is great news knowing she still had a bacteria infection instead of a possible trachea condition. You never know with these little guys. So many things to worry about. Thanks! |
Thanks. Keep me updated as well please. |
Hey J I spoke to my vet right after you found out about Doxycycline and we both agreed that we will try it out. She wrote out a perscription for liquid form. But I can't find any pharmacy that carries the liquid. Do you have pills or liquid and where did you find it. Thanks. Hope all is working out. |
Here is what is on the bottle that my vet wrote out: doxyctcline suspensiob 25 mg/5 ml give 0.25 cc 2ce daily. Gypsy is only 2.1 lbs. Dr Kara crushed the pills herself and made it in to liquid form. I go to Banfield pet hospital in Petsmart. I hope it helps. I remember she said that the pills had the waxy coating so she was afraid that it would clog the syringe, but it is working fine. she also was not sure if it had to be kept in refridge, but to do so just in case. |
Yes I have liquid also. I finally found a pharmacy that had it. The bottle says 25mg/5ml. My dog is 4lbs she is on 2ml twice a day. First dose was today. Lets wait and see. |
Gypsy Hey J how is the little one doing? Any change in the cough? |
Hey. I just got off the phone with her vet. Gypsy has not coughed that I have heard since about 8 pm last night. I am not sure about while I was a work though. I think she sounds a little raspy, barely though and not all the time. No one else thinks she does. So to the vet tomorrow to see how she is doing. How is your baby doing? I hope the meds work. One thing I hate is now she never wants to come to me if she thinks I have meds in my hand. Heaven forbid if I go to the fridge before trying to get her to come to me. |
That is so true. My baby used to run away when I walked over to the fridge. But now she has been on so many meds she is used to it. She just gives up. Its so pathetic. I think she is doing better. The past 2 nights have been quiet. She still has the cough but its at its worst in the am. I don't know anymore. After a while you head starts playing games with you but I think she is improving. Today is the fourth day on these meds. Usually thats when I see a change in the cough. Lets keep our fingers crossed. Good Luck! |
another update Just got back from vet. Very good visit. She has only coughed 1ce in the past 24 hrs and it was only a short cough, not as long as the others. When dr felt of her throat she did not cough at all! She has been sorta whimpering a little but the dr sd the med could be making her joints ache. The poor baby, I know how that can feel. She is definitely doing better and she may be able to get some shots soon. Dr said will def give her one at a time to make sure no problems. |
My Topher came down with a bad cough a couple of weeks after I got him. My groomer thought that it sounded like kennel cough and at first the receptionist at the vet's office thought so too....it ended up that Topher had TONSILLITIS. He was treated with antibiotics for two weeks and the cough is gone and his tonsils have cleared up. Make sure that when the vet is checking for kennel cough that he/she also THOROUGHLY examines the tonsils! |
Our Paris got kennel cough when she went and got her microchip implanted. It lasted about a month to two and was only put on antibiotics for 10-12 days. My vet said that once they get it it has to run it's course like a cold. You don't want it to develope into anything more though hince the anibiotics. |
Unfortunetly, gypsy had 3 strains of bacteria causing hep problems. Which is why taking so long to get rid of it. She has not been coughing and will go back to vet Tuesday. edited to add: She was ok to start on heartguard and flea meds. She still has not gotten her next shots yet. I said i would throw a party when she does. |
Hey J I don't think the antibiotics are working. I thought she was getting better but last night was a bad night. I'm leaning towards trachea collapse. Its so sad. I'm going to stop the antibiotics in a couple of days and just keep here on cough suppressants then hopefully get her spayed. Does anyone have experience with torbutol, the cough suppressant. She has been on it before but it just knocks her out but she still ends up coughing in the middle of the night anyway. Any thoughts? |
