Possible Heart Murmur Well Lexi went to the vet yesterday for her shots and well we were told some upsetting news. The vet said there may be a slight murmur that she heard. I was wondering if you all could help me or give me some advice. I'm really scared that it's going to be major. She's 4 months old and has been to the vet 3 times prior to this last visit and nothing of this sort ever came up. So my question is why now? Why is it that now she thinks she hears a slight murmur? Are there things that can be done to prevent it from getting worse? Lexi is very energetic and always playing with Harely so I'm really worried. Please help me.....Very Worried Mommy here. |
I am sorry to hear about Lexi.....but I can't help on this one as I have never had this before. Maybe do a search on here and see if you might find something in this line. |

As long as she is growing, playing and active, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I know anesthesia is always questionable, but if it's not a serious heart murmur I think you won't even notice it. You can have an ultrasound performed to see exactly what is causing the murmur, but if she is otherwise healthy I wouldn't pay for the tests at this point. Who knows, it suddenly appeared, maybe it will suddenly disappear by the next appointment. We'll keep our fingers crossed for you! |

"May be a slight murmur....." doesn't sound too serious, if that is exactly what your vet said. A lot of murmurs are termed "innocent" or "benign" and are not really harmful at all. Hopefully, this is the type that your little pup has. You should follow-up with your vet and find out more about the type of murmur your little dog has. Unfortunately, sometimes they come up with these "off the wall remarks" -- knowing nothing is seriously wrong them - but don't realize how much they can get us worrying. Again - find out more about your pup's murmur. I work in cardiology, and believe me, we have many patients with harmless murmurs. I have one myself. Good luck! Carol Jean |
Well it is great to hear that many of you are thinking positive it's helping me not to worry as much. Thank you I will keep in touch with my vet and hopefully I can find some more info on these innocent murmurs. |

I am new to this site but when I saw that your Lexi has a murmur I wanted to pass this along to you. My Magnum has had a murmur since he was 1 year old, he is now almost fifteen in fact I came to this site for the first time last night feeling very scared and alone because Magnum is not doing very good his murmur has gotten very bad this past year and last night I thought I was going to lose him. He is doing better today. It is very possible for Lexi to live a long life even with a murmur. |
Our hearts go out to Magnum. Like I said earlier I'm hoping this is nothing to worry about...but then again if it is then we'll just take it one day at a time. I've been watching her as she plays with Harely and she seems to do okay she's not like gasping for air or anything so I guess that's a good sign in a way. Thank you so much for your reply. |
Update on Lexi's Possible Murmur Well we went to the vet on Friday and at first the vet didn't say anything about there being a murmur. I was wondering since she hadn't said anything during the exam then I took it as ummmm there's nothing to worry about. I was concerned though when we were getting ready to leave and she didn't mention anything about the murmur. Since the last visit she said she wanted to monitor it just to see if it's still there I thought it was odd that she didn't say a word. So of course I asked her if she had heard anything and she no but then again she really wasn't paying close attention. My vet in a way is kinda scarying me here if she's not really paying attentio during the exams. Well she listened again with her instrument and then told me it's getting better. I guess last time it was at a 2 now it's more of a 1-2. I have no idea what this means. Overall Lexi looks quite healthy. She and Harley went in for their summer cuts yesterday. I'm having problems with my camera but as soon as it's fixed I will post the pics up in the nursery to update their page. It's time for bed on our end we'll bark at ya'll later....good night! |
The vet heard a 'slight murmur' in Jasper one time, but by the next time he kept listening and listening for it and said his heart sounded perfectly fine now. I think it could have something to do with our babies being so nervous for the doctors visit. Jasper gets all shaky and scared and his heart is always racing and the vet picks him up and calms him down and he's fine after that. I'm sure your baby will live a long happy life! |
