Legg Perthes Disease Sorry to hear about your little Reese. Well I have to say I am glad we decided to do the surgery in April. I could not bear to watch Cody be debilitated the way he was. Anyway, he is 3 months post op and is doing fine. We got another Yorkie in June and they are great playmates and the puppy is probably helping the recovery along. Cody doesn/t seem to be able to run as long as he did before but he will only limp now occassionally--I think he will continue to improve. We paid about the same for his surgery which was a drag but he is part of the family!! anyway, best of luck to you in making your decision.. Margaret |

i'm just wondering how long after the FMO surgery did your yorkie stop limping? |
also, since my yorkie has been limping about 4 months before the surgery and still limping after 1 week of surgery, her leg muscles on her affected leg is much smaller than her good leg. what treatments you do after the surgery to help regain the muscles and to get your yorkie to start using her affeced leg again? |
My Abbie had the surgery @ about 8 months. She had only been limping for about 3 weeks. The surgeon ( Dr Hunte, who was great!!!) explained that Abbie's leg would always appear to be shorter. but is not. It is the muscles that is the problem. If you stand behind Abbie you will see that the leg is a bit shorter in appearnace. She had physical therapy with a PT specialist and then we did excercies with her at home. Now about 1 year post surgery she runs, Jumps ( she can jump so far and so high) just like our older yorkie. Be dilligent with the pt and you will see results. It also helps to have a great surgeon! |
Did you all call your breeders and tell them that your dogs had this disease? Your contracts (if you have one) should cover this. Good Luck! |
Just diagnosed!! Hi everyone! I am also new to this community. Yesterday had my little guy Keiko at the vet only to hear the bad news of perthes disease. I am so saddened and disappointed as he is my second. I lost my first one last summer due to portosystemic shunts. Keiko is only 7mths old, am trying to find out if this is definitely a inherited disease? I found my little guy through a breeder, should she stop breeding the parents? I would let your breeder know....I am pretty sure it is genetic. Mya is still in recovery right now...she actually had to go BACK into surgery because the bone splintered after the first...so we are going on about 3-4 months now and she is finally at like 85% using it I would say. The limping does eventually go away I hear. Apparently, if they pick up speed sometimes it is easier for them to carry the leg when they run even years after surgery so that is normal. Make sure to talk to your doctor about all the risks involved and how to prevent any complications. Be very adamant about giving the suppliments and doing the exercises that your vet will give you about 10 days post-op...it helps immensely. I also did bath aerobics with Mya bc she hated the stretches and it forced her to swim and use the muscle a little. Let me know if you have any questions!
