Bee sting? Baby Benadryl????? One of my guys within the last hour got stung by a bee. It took us a few minutes to find the stinger and pull it out. It left quite a bruise on the bottom of his foot below the pad. We gave him 3 drops of Metacam (Meloxicam) a prescribed pain med from teeth pulling. I also applied pet hydrocortisone but the puppy is licking the foot, crying in pain and can't find a comfortable positiion to lay in. I read all the posts on stings and noticed some of you mentioned .5 cc of baby benadryl. Can he have this after the Metacam? Of course it is 7 pm on Saturday nite and the vet is closed..... |
I don't think the Benadryl will help with pain only swelling and since I don't know if there might be a reaction with the pain medicine I probably would play it safe. I think I would go down and get some Epsom salt and soak her foot which will draw out the poison and help with the pain. Poor baby. |
Oh No! Poor baby! I don't know about taking the benadryl after the pain meds. Is there an ER vet you can call? If not I can call mine |
I will try to get info out of the ER vet. Usually they want you to bring the dog in with the walk in price of $100. |
Oh goodness, if they won't help you over the phone let me know. I have a friend that works at the ER clinic here and I can call her! |

OK I'm calling now.......Don't give the Benadryl. The licking will continue, try putting some neosporin on it if he is continuosly licking. He said he is licking out of annoyance and irritation, not pain. Keep an eye on it for swelling. Also you may want to try wrapping a cool washcloth around his paw if the licking continues. |
Ok I wanted you to see all that first :) Jeremiah said that the Benadryl wouldn't really do anything if there is no swelling and since you already gave pain meds that was the right thing to do. Keep an eye on him to check for swelling. |

If your baby does not have any trouble breathing or does not have hives all over or all the other signs that humans exhibit when they have an "anaphylactic reaction" (that means really bad and all over the body) I would just use something on the skin to relieve itching. There are 2 things I CANNOT be without in my first aid box-1) OraJel -Max. strength and 2) aloe with benzocaine which I keep in the frig...Either of those have a numbing effect and will help with pain and itching when applied to the area.. Use bitter apple or coat saver or something that keeps them from chewing and that will help with the licking.. I hope this helps a little in lieu of a vet but I am not an expert. Just had a lot of experience with my dogs and in human nursing... |
He's doing ok today. Thanks all of you for your help. I will be updating my puppy 1st aid kit this week. I will start a new thread on this topic. |
