New here...Please Advise Hello All: I am new here and I already have a question. We have a new puppy that we got one week ago. The pup has been doing fantastic until Wednesday night. He is apathetic and will not eat. When he drinks (which is very little) he promptly throws up. He slept all day yesterday...literally all day. Going to the vet today, first thing this morning, but I thought I would get your all's opinion before I went. Thanks in advance for your help. |
Welcome I have been reading these symptoms more and more lately. Not sure what it is but its good that you are seeking help for your new puppy. How old is she/he ? Did you ever try giving her nutrical? Well anyway, Welcome, and I hope your furbaby get better soon and then you can post pictures. |
This little guy is 9 weeks old. I am not sure what nutrical is. My 12 yo daughter is so worried...spent most of the night awake checking on the little guy. She is already so attached to him....she has a "thing" when it comes to forming relationships with animals. I smell "vet school" in my future budget. Yikes! Thanks for the response. |
Nutrical is a nutritional suppliment with sugar in it.. Little ones sometimes need the sugar to avoid getting hypoglycemia. I think you can get it from petsmart. You should be able to get it from your vet I did. You just give a fingertip amount of it. As far as eating try cottage cheese or boiled chicken and rice. Another thing picky eaters often eat is LIL Caesars moist dog food. You can get it at the grocery store. Good luck I hope your little one gets better soon. |
Thanks. He was eating the lamb and rice flavor Science Diet (what the breeder used) and eating pretty well. His sudden stoppage is what alarms me. He is once again just laying still and not moving. He did have some diarrhea sometime last night, but it had no substance to it. Vet opens in a couple of hours and I will head that way. The vet is a personal frind of mine, which helps. |
in my thoughts Hi how did you get on at the vet? I hope everything is okay. |
Please keep us posted. We are all hoping your puppy is okay! |

Hope the little baby is okay. Yes, please keep us posted on how he is doing. Welcome! |
Okay, just returned from vets office. Coccidiosis (I know that is probably spelled wrong) is the diagnosis. Yikes! I.V. fluids and I.V. antibiotics with a night or 2 in the hospital. Vet thinks he'll make it....at least it wasn't parvo. I bought the little guy from a small breeder..no puppy mill....and my vet called the breeder and told her of the situation. I haven't heard from the breeder yet...but I expect I will. Her place was clean and very respectable looking. I'll keep you guys posted on the prognosis. Thanks for the welcome. Hopefully one day I can contribute to the forum as opposed to just learning form it. |
I am so glad your pup is getting care. Good luck and keep us posted |
That's what my Dylan has I picked up my new little yorkie puppy 3 weeks ago when he was 8 weeks old from a breeder. I took him to my vet the next day to be checked and he also had coccidia. The vet said it is very common when purchasing a dog from a pet shop or a breeder. The vet said that he only saw a few parasites in his fecal and put him on medication for a week. The breeder also had him on this medication so that is probably why he only had a few of the parasites. I took him back yesterday for a booster shot and he still had a few coccidia in his stool sample. My vet seemed concerned because Dylan weighed 1.2 lbs at 8 weeks and 3 weeks later he only weighed 1.25 lbs. His stool is firm now though (it wasn't the first week I had him) and he has a healthy appetite and hasn't thrown up. I'm worried he won't be able to get over it. Their own immune system has to fight it off. I sure hope your puppy is okay and gets better. It sounds like he is getting really good care and that they are treating the problem aggressively. Please keep us posted on how he is doing. :( |
