Desperate for advice...
 

Hi everyone,

I have posted a couple of days ago anticipating my new Yorkie's arrival. Well he has arrived and he's absolutely the cutest. He had diarrhea which I didn't think much off since its the stress of the new home and all but he was pretty active, very energetic and inquisitive if his surroundings which made me think nothing of it. He was very picky eating though, (I fed him Eukanuba samll puppy chow) and he really hadn't eaten much since he arrived.

The first visit to vet was 2 days ago and he wasn't dewormed yet because according to the vet he had diarrhea but I was given KAPTIN to help it stop and bring him back in a week.

Well it kept getting worse and he also wouldn't stop rubbing his little tushy across the floor so I jumped to this forum looking for answers. I read that he may need his anal glands to be expressed so I rushed him to the vet today where it was done a couple of hours ago but it has reached a point now where its not even diarrhea it just explosive stinky clear mucus so stinky it gave me a migraine!! I was even mistaking it for pee. Luckily it happened at the hospital so after examining a sample the vet ruled out any major baterial infections and gave him an injection of antibiotics and gave me some pills to give to him over a period of four days and to feed him boiled rice.

I am cooking the rice right now but i was wondering if anyone has come across this before.. I know I may seem like the neurotic new mommy but I just want a healthy puppy again hes getting more and more lethargic.

Welcome to YT!! Hopefully some more knowledgeable members will be on soon and can offer more expert advice. Meanwhile, it sounds like your baby has a serious problem. Diarrhea can be a very dangerous thing because of dehydration .... this can happen in a matter of hours. Is he drinking plenty of water? We had to give Toto pedialite when this happened with her. She had an intestinel inflammation and was also throwing up. If I were you, I would make sure my vet is familiar with the small breed and insist on more tests, etc. until he gets to the root of the problem. If he can't find the problem, I would seek a vet who is more familiar with the breed. Good luck and please keep us updated!!

He still hadn't pooped since the last episode at the vet about 4 hours ago. He does drink water though and did not throw up so far. He refused to eat the rice I made him. He's just laying around. I took him out and as soon as I put him down he just curled up and went to sleep in the grass.

Could he be dehydrated? He's very weak also could it be hypoglycemia? If he keeps this up it will eventually lead to it. I'm contemplating on whether or not to give him some honey or sugar but I read here it causes runny stool and he already has that.

I don't know what to do with him. I'm gonna make him some chicken now and hope for the best.

You say the vet checked him for anything bacterial, did he check him for parasites? I am assuming he would have but you just never know. I might call back and ask exactly what he was tested for just to be safe make sure they tested for coccidia and giardia.
And if they didnt take him right back in.

Don't mean to scare you, but this sounds serious! Have you given him NutriCal? If I were you, I would get him to the vet ASAP. Sounds like he may be dehyrated! Keep us updated, please!

My baby threw up when I first brought him home but he never had diarrhea. The vet did tell me I could give him 5 cc's of Karo syrup to help keep Reggie from becoming hypoglycemic. I also have given him plain chicken or turkey baby food in small quantities when his tummy was upset. Cottage cheese is another favorite of Yorkies... in small quantities when his tummy is upset.

Check with other members first to see what things to avoid if he has diarrhea though since I haven't had any experience with that.

He did test for coccidia and giardia all negative but I really don't feel that vet is very competent.

Thanks for your replies. I am going to try and feed him once more. He is jumping out of his basket to go for drinks of water or just to sit up and stare at me. If he is not better by tonight I will definately be taking him back to the vet or a different one for that matter.

Hon, I don't want to scare you, but if it were me, I wouldn't wait until tonight. These little guys can go down hill so quickly! He may be lethargic because of low blood sugar. If you have nutrical, give him that. If you haven't had a chance to get it yet put some karo syrup on your finger and he should lick it off. Just like a new born baby these guys can go from just fine to very sick in a heartbeat. He could have had just something intestinal and that is fine now but a new puppy should not curl up and go to sleep when you take him out. If you are even a little leary of this vet's competence, go with your gut feeling and take him somewhere else. Good luck, I'll say a little prayer for him.

If he is dehydrated and or hypoglycemic with this kind of diahrrea he needs to be seen by another vet(especially if you doubt competence).
I have a very small yorkie and when she threw up a few times one morning I took her in and they gave her fluids because she was already a little dehydrated from throwing up.
Probably the best advise is to take him in to another vet this morning. Teri is right, they can go downhill very very fast.

I did give him some karo syrup 30 minutes ago and i'm on my way out the door now.

so sorry to hear of your babies problems. About a month ago I switched Louie and Bella's food, and Bella had a bad reaction to the change. Her stools were wet and mucusy like you said. I brought a her and a sample to the vet, and they found nothing except that they said her stomach was upset and irritated from the sudden change of food. He gave me some pill to give her for 5 days, and by the 2nd day she was better. I hope that it is something small like this and your baby will be back to normal soon. Good Luck to you.

Just a suggestion...Trixie had to go on a rice and boiled chicken diet not long ago. She wouldn't eat the rice either and at vet suggestion, I added a bit of chicken broth flavor bullion (whatever you call it) to it to give it smell/flavor and she gobbled it right up. :)

Hoping for the best for your little one...prayers and well wishes coming your way. Like the others have said, little ones can go downhill really fast. Oscar had coccidia and I took him to the vet the same day I noticed the mucous in his stool...he was already a level 2 with level 4 being the worst. The vet said you can never be too careful with these tiny babies. He told me that he would not stop worring about a small dog til they were 10 pounds...but with a lot of Yorkies, that will never happen as a lot are lighter than 10 pounds. Oscar bounced back really quick tho...keep us all posted. By the way, welcome to Yorkie Talk...you will love it here!

Im so sorry that he is going through this! And I am sorry that you are having to deal with it as well. Are you feeding him the same food now that the breader was feeding him? Sometimes the drastic change to a different food can be difficult on them. Im glad to see that you decided to take him in for another opinion. I think you have made the best decision for him! Keep us informed on how he is!

Okay i'm back. Again, they found nothing. Just a very upset stomach and they gave him some fluid. I had already started giving him the medication from the first vet and now that we are back he seems better and more alert. I made him some chicken to mix with the rice and he gobbled up the chicken but left the rice!

He is still up to his same mischief but at a slower pace. I'm hoping he is getting better and won't relapse i'll be watching him.

Thanks for your concern and prayers I probably wouldn't have gone back to a vet so soon if it hadn't been for your advice. I have had some experience with big dogs but the smaller ones are new to me.

I just have one little thing to mention. If you have doubts about your VET, CHANGE VETS. Find a vet that you can trust and have confidence in because it could mean your yorkies life............Good Luck and please keep us updated. WE CARE......... :) :thumbup: :)

When my puppy got sick my vet suggested rice mixed with cottage cheese. I mixed it up and added a little maple syrup for flavor this may help your little one eat the rice. and the syrup should be good for his blood sugar.

With the tiny ones the best rule of thumb to follow is "better safe than sorry".
I am glad they found nothing but maybe you can try some oatmeal instead of the rice, that is what my vet suggests because that is what happens, they pick the rice right out. Good luck with your new baby and I hope he feels better soon.

My first thought was parvo..he had the symptoms..did they check him for that? I would keep a close eye on him. Good luck..
