Help I need help. I have a sweet but overly aggressive Yorkie. She is a year old and over the past month, her personality has changed. She can no longer ride in a car without becoming upset and trembling. She growls when anyone tries to pick her up. She has become very aggressive toward other dogs and yesterday, she bit my wife. My wife was wearing thin leather dress glove that are lightly lined. My dog bit her causing scrapes and bruising on my wifes hand. Although there was no torn flesh, I believe there would have been had she not been wearing the gloves. I was always taught that a dog that bites should be put to sleep. Should this dog be put down? Is this behavior just her breed? I am very conflicted over the two personalities this dog is showing. Does anyone have an opinion? Thanks. |

No I definitely would not have her put to sleep. I would take her to the vet and see if maybe there is something medically wrong with her and then I would enroll her in som training classes to see if you can get it under control. I've had 4 yorkies and none of them ever had this type of agression. Have you had her since she was a puppy or was she a rescue? Good luck and please keep us posted. Welcome to YT. |
aggression This is NOT a Yorkie trait!! Yes, take her to a vet for a health screening..talk to the breeders, of course most will not admit to breeding from an aggressive parent..but I find temperment is for the most part genetic. I have taken in badly neglected and abused Yorkies over the years, most were never aggressive..they may have been scared or shy, but not biters. Then I have seen a well loved, cared for puppy into a "demon seed"...only to find out the parents are aggressive. Good Luck |
Yes, you need to make sure there are no medical problems first. I'm adding a link to the Dog Whisperers website. He insists that all dog problems are human created, by the humans not being assertive pack leaders. Maybe it will give you some insight on what caused the problem. |
