Best way to deal with a seizure Hi, I was just wondering if anyone has any advice on what to do when my dog has a seizure and what to do afterwards to take care of the baby. What are good signs and what are not...etc. |
The best way to deal with seizure is to have the little one check by a vet to see what is causing the seizure . |
well I already know...she was at the vet this morning and we found out that she had HYPOGLCEMIA. I just want to see what I can do when it happens again |
the best way to make sure that she doesn't have a hypoglycemic seizure is to feed her often and keep nurtical and/or a bottle of karo syrup around. If you have to boil chicken and white rice or give her plain yogurt just to make sure she eats. I know our babies can be finicky eaters sometimes. Also, gerber chicken and rice is good as well. |
gotcha, thanks, i just fed her some chicken and rice and she loves it!! |
Please Give Her... Nurtical or Nutristat at Least 3 times a day, even if she's eating and more if she is being finicky! Has she been checked by your vet? There could be an underlying condition causing the hypoglycemia. When she is having a seizure keep her from hurting herself, like on hard floors. Good Luck! |

While she is actually seizing, protect her from all hard surfaces. Lay her on a pillow on the floor and stay with her. Make sure you have Nutri-Cal or HONEY everywhere in your home. I carry it in my purses....as soon as she relaxes after the seizure squeeze a little honey or nutrical along the side on her tongue just under it where she will not choke. Keep giving that til she is reacting. She will still be confused after a grand mal seizure so do not try to stand her up or make loud noises or shake her. She could start seizing again. Start a log-keep everything about her in the log with the date , what the incident was, how long it lasted, what did you and she do right before the seizure and then how she is after. Does she start to twitch in a certain area everytime? That means something. Oh, lordy, I have so much more to say but I always write a book. Please PM me if you think I can help. I am not a vet but I am an old, really old experienced nurse and breeder.. |

Sometimes it helps bring them out of a seizure faster by talking to them and petting them, it calms them down. I have had a couple dogs that had seizures their whole lives from head trauma, they can sense it is coming, and always seek us out to be near us when it is about to happen. As others have said here, keep them somewhere safe so they don't fall off something and get hurt worse, or bang around. Sometimes they will try to stand when they aren't ready yet, and fall down. If it were from head trauma I would tell you that if they happen more than once or twice a week, or last for more than 20 minutes, you might need to medicate them, but since it was from hypoglycemia it shouldn't happen that often since you know what caused it and how to prevent it. |

Here's more tips that really helps. Put an ice pack on the lower back. It helps to bring them out of the seizure more quickly. It has to be between the lower rib cage and their tail. It won't work anywhere else. Humans need to stay calm and talk to them in a soothing way. DON'T put your fingers in their mouth! Dogs can not swallow their toungues. Give them a little nutrical, honey or vanilla ice cream after. Give them lots of love and praise for how brave they were during the episode! If the seizure lasts more than 1 full minute or if they have more than 3 in a 24 hour period, take them to the nearest vet ASAP! A long seizure or cluster of seizures can cause permanent brain damage. |

Honey, Karo or Nutri-Cal should work fine for the hypoglycemia. When we gave Izzy B. honey, though, she immediately went into another seizure, but hers were not caused by hypoglycemia. And Corinne is correct - if more than 3 seizures in a 24-hour period or back-to-back, take to vet immediately. Our Izzy had 3 seizures in a 3-hour period and almost died by the time we made the 35-mile trip to the vet in the middle of the night. :animal-pa Barbara |
