Bad reaction to vaccine I was so scared! Yesterday I took Josie to the vet for a check up and they gave her a booster shot and a rabies vaccine. Everything was fine when we left but on the way home Josie threw up in the car and as we pulled into our driveway she collapsed and her tongue was blue and hanging out. She wouldn't answer me, so I rushed her into the house and put some honey on her gums ( I didn't know what was going on, I thought maybe hypoglycemia?) She started to come around a little then drank some water, then I took her outside but she still wouldn't walk and she had diahrreah. I called the vet and brought her back right away. Her gums were still blue and gray but she was walking again by the time I got her there. They gave her a steroid injection and benadryl injection then we had to wait for 45 minutes until her gum color was back to normal. They said she could have died and she had a SEVERE reaction to her vaccines. They told me she can never have more than one vaccine at a time again and before hand they have to give her bendaryl and a steroid again. Then keep us for at least an hour to make sure she is ok. I was soooo upset yesterday and I held Josie all day. I am afraid for her to have anymore shots. Has this happened to anyone else? |
Wow what a scare that must have been. I am glad she is doing better now. i would just keep your eye on her. My Jewels had a small reaction to the bordatello vaccine but nothing as severe as your dog had. |
my chi is getting his tommorrow im a nervous wreck ! i hear so many of these stories ! im glad your girl is ok ! |
Oh Sarah, How scarey. When I took Yogi for his back in Dec. It was about 4:00pm and by 9:00 all he did was lay around, I mean I had to pick him up and carry him around on a pillow because he whimpered if I just held him. He was hot feeling, at 7:00 the next morning I called the Vet and they just said, "oh, yeah sometimes those little dogs do that when they get all of them at once." It was nothing like what Josie went through but enough that I won't let him get all of them at once again. Hope your little girl is ok now? Steph |
I took Dezi last week and she got her last three puppy shots. The vet told me she could have a reaction to them, so I had to watch her closely. She said to check for swollen tongue and face. She was very sleepy, by ten o'clock she was back to normal. Thank god she did not have a bad reaction. Hope your baby is feeling better. |
Wow, I'm glad to hear Josie is ok! I could only imagine the stress you must have been under. |
[SIZE=3]So glad Josie is okay. That is one of the reasons we say do not give rabies within 2 weeks of her puppy shot. And, no Lepto or corona is given to these tinies..We assault their immune systems and expect these tiny beings to be fine with it. Well, they are not!!! |
IM so sorry that Josie had such a bad reaction to her shots. Im glad she is fine now. I knew some can get a reaction, but wow I didnt know it can be so bad. |
bunjee was okay with two shots at a time, but had a bad reaction and threw up when he had 3 shots at a time. so never again!!! i hope your little one is fine now. |
That's so terrible! Twinkie had all of her shots already when I got her, but got her rabies shot a day before I got her and she had a small lump on her shoulder from it. My Princess chi got a large lump from one of her regular vaccines - nothing serious, but the vet said to not use that brand ever again since she was fine with the previous brand used for her shots. My sisters chi reacts TERRIBLY to any vaccines!!! She CANNOT have any. Her face swells up sooo big, that we don't get her done anymore. At first they would pump her with steroids and benadryl prior to any vaccines, but no shots anymore it's just not worth it since she is an indoor dog. |
OHG! Bless your heart! I could not imagine how scared you were! You just never know! It could happen to any of our babies! I myself had a bad reaction to an antibiotic injection once. They gave me the shot and told me I could go home. When I was walking to the desk at the Dr.'s office I collapsed on the floor. When I woke up I was in a hospital bed. They told me that the shot had caused my blood pressure to drop drastically. I was so lucky that there were people there that knew what to do! Your baby was lucky too! She had a good mommy to take her right back! Thank God! I hope that you never have to go through something like this again! |
Oh my gosh! You poor girl! That was a terrible scare and thank goodness little Josie girl survived! I would be scared to give her any more shots also! I know there are some alternatives...like holistic...but I don't know much about that! Bless your heart...I'm so glad your babie's alive and with you!!! |
Whoa that is a severe reaction! I'm so sorry to hear of Josie not feeling well. When Paddy was about 5 months old, I remember her being quite ill with a cold and vomiting so they gave her a shot of something. She had a severe reaction to it when we got home (of course after hours when the vet was closed). She was pacing like she was out of her mind, crawling along the walls - it was so scary - but the emergency clinic said to give her Benadryl and monitor her. It worked quickly! I hope that was all your little Josie needed to feel better. But it would probably be wise to space out any future injections like they suggested. I've had vets do that for mine when they were younger. Good luck!!! |
I just wanted to let you know that you aren't alone. Linus had a bad reaction to his rabies shot also. His wasn't nearly as severe as your baby's though. I'm so sorry that it happened. He also has to take the same precautions when he gets his booster (the steriod and the antihistamine...plus a 2 hour waiting period). Something you might want to look into that I am doing for him is a pardon to the state law for rabies vaccinations. Your vet can tell the state that the shot could cost her her life and she won't have to have boosters that often. They can do a titer (sp?) to see if the antibodies are still in her system and if they are she doesn't need a booster. I'm so glad to hear that she's feeling better though. I know how scared you must have been!!!!! |
Yes..it absolutely can happen~ Quote:
She had them and within 30 min...sent her into an auto-immune collapse. After a blood transfusion..and 48 hr. vigil...I lost her at age 3... :lovewings Beautiful apricot toy poodle...named Broadway Annie.... I have Sophie now to occupy my heart. :D .and she does...but yearly shots coming up also sends me into cold sweats...and yes...I'd never do more than one at a time again with Sophie. I know its different..but I still don't trust these vaccines...and Yorkies are little dogs...Your right to be cautious. For those of you that didn't know...that is the reason for my Yorkie Talk name...Annadoodle...(for Annie...we called her Annadoodle the poodle) :heart to |
