puppy sick Hello, I guess you all know that I am bottle feeding a litter of 5 puppies. They are all gaining weight and are doing well. They turned 3wks on this last Thurs. One of the pups took the bottle this morning really well. She was up and playing and etc. A little while later she vommitted all of the milk back up. I am worried about her. Do any of you have any suggestions. Should I call the vet? I am not sure what to do or why she did this. She also had a little bit of runny poo too. She is the only one doing this. Since this happened she has been sheivering and trying to sleep. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |
Is this girl on the smaller size? I to am handraising a litter of 5. They are all weaned and doing fine. What a Job! Anyway the lil boy in this litter needed feeding more frequently than the others. He went Hypoglycemic on me. Try giving her some Nutristat or Nutrical. if it works she probaly needs to be fed more often than the others. If it doesn't seem to help, call your vet. Good Luck and Good Job! :good job: |
She used to be the smallest pup but in the last 3 days she has passed the 2 that were just ahead of her. She is now the 3rd largest pup. She has been getting extra feedings since she had lost the most weight and I thought I was going to lose her. I have been worried about her since I started bottle feeding them. I was just starting to have hope that she was going to make it but now I am not so sure. I am really worried about her. The mom to this litter is finally over her mastisits and now is producing lots of milk and has been nursing them more. I only have 2 pups that really seem hungry enough to take the bottle now. (This pup is one of them). I don't know if maybe she is being overfed? Maybe she is having a reaction to the wormer she got yesterday? I am just not sure. I will worry until these pups are weaned and off to their new lives. (Although I think I may keep this one.)lol Thanks for the advise. |
What formula do you use? Don't use any with lactose in it. Try goat's milk formula BUT you also need to give the puppies some BeneBac or acidophilus-that is good bacteria that they need in their bowels to digest foor. You might start them on a wee smidgen on gruel. We can tell you what to use if you want. But, I definitely would go to the vet and maybe get fluids to get her boosted.. |
I have been feeding the pups for the last couple of weeks and this is the first problem I've had with one of them being sick. I am feeding them Just Born Advanced Fromula Milk Replacer For Puppies Plus Colostrum. Do they normally take a couple of weeks before the formula don't agree with them? I am planning on calling the vet first thing in the morning. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for me. I really appreciate all of the advice I get here. Thanks- :aimeeyork |
Oh, I forgot to ask....What is gruel? Help! |
I will have your pup :littleang in my thoughts and prayers for her to get better fast. |
Thank you. You are very kind. :) |
Gruel is simply something like baby cereal, or crushed dry dog food til it is like coarse meal. Add formula to it and hold it in a saucer under the dog's chin. Might use a little from your finger or a very small baby feeding spoon. The formula must be kept fairly warm so make a just a wee bit and set it in how water to keep warm. There is a condition called fading puppy syndrome and that can occur no matter how the dog has been doing. The puppy's tummy feels full, and looks really round. They will crawl to a corner and they cry a high pitched whine..Sometimes the benebac, warmth and constant stimulation helps a bit. But, just keep feeding her and letting mom pee and poop her.. or you have to do it. So keep her really warm0her temp should be around a hundred ar a bit below.. Good Luck with that little one. |
I can't offer advice, but want to wish this baby well and I will pray for her! I hope she improves and is a healthy pup soon! Best wishes! |
