Ear Mites and Perhaps Food Allergies? I am taking Pancake to the vet today because for the last couple days I noticed she has been biting at her paws (one specific paw more than the others). I searched the forums and it was suggested she may have food allergies. Also, she has been scratching at her ears and I looked and there seems to be some dark brown spots in there. She also seems very irritated. I have had her for a week and haven't givin her a proper bath. Could this have anything to do with it? My main question is should I bathe her before going to the vet, or could that hide some symptoms? Also I'm afraid to give her coat a good brushing because I also read here that there skin can get red and if left untreated, blistered. Should I comb her anyway? I don't want to hurt her more, but I can't take her to the vet with her coat looking the way it is. |
for the ear mites your vet will give you meds to put in the ears that will clear it right up. My dog has food allergies and they flaired up and we thought that was his problems and it ended up that he had mites on his body and had to be dipped. That may or may not be your problem. With him he was chewing bald spots on his body so it was more severe sounding than you are talking about. What kind of food are you feeding? Does it have corn in it? If so I would find a food without corn in it it is an allergy irritant. Also an oatmeal shampoo. I would not bathe her before going to the vet just take her how she is so he can have a look at her. |
I feed her Nutrience Transition - Puppy Step One, yes it does have corn. It was what the pet store was feeding her. I also have a variety of treats I feed her, maybe I should cut it down to only one kind? |
I wou;ld gradually change to a food without corn in it. Nutro, Innova, Canidae, Natural Balance, Chicken Soup and california Natural are some good food choices. You can find Nutro at petsmart. When you have a dog with allergies they cant take the corn. I had to switch Chachi he was eating Royal Canin which is a pretty good food but it had corn in it. We could tell imediately whenever he ate it the itching was worse. |

I would definitely suspect ear mites and as was mentioned she may even have mites on her body. I wouldn't give her a bath. If she needs to be dipped it may further irritate her skin and you don't want to take her out chilled anyway. My vet thinks the biggest cause of allergies is too much protein in their diets, but he also said it could be something airborne. |
I agree-no bath til the vet evaluates the condition of her skin. If she has certain mites, her hoomans can be bitten by them, too. So, if you itch or have little red spots, especially across your shoulders or legs or anywhere that she spends her time, you might want to ask your vet or doc if treatment is needed. When tiny fragile puppies are exposed to so many other dogs and diseases, their immune systems get bombarded with all kinds of germs. They go into overdrive and see everything as something the little white cells should attack. Once you have her settled in and over the trauma she has lived with, her problems might stop. Well we just got back from the vet and she said pancake was fine. She said there are many reasons a puppy scratches. And the brown looking specs in her ear were just wax mixed with dirt. Well I thought wax was usually more in one area and not spread throughout the ear in little specs of brown that resemble freckles. Oh well, I'm just glad she is okay, they clipped her nails so maybe she will stop biting at her paws now. |
The vet also said she was too young for me to have to worry about allergies. Pancake is 10 weeks old. The vet said even though she was a terrier and this makes allergies more common, I shouldn't worry about it until later. Well I guess I am just a worrier when it comes to my baby girl. She also hadn't eaten anything today and not much the day before which in unlike her. She slept all today; again not like her. The vet said puppies don't eat regurlarly like adult dogs do. I don't know, if she isn't acting like herself again soon, I think I will get a second opinion. I told the vet about her runny nose (I notice it mostly after she wakes from a nap) and the vet said if it is clear (which it is) then I have nothing to worry about. But i've read everywhere that runny noses are not good. She said her temperature was fine. Well I just hope my pup is okay, I love her more than the world :love: |
