Kennel Cough
 

Well, my daughter got her little yorkie as a early valentines day gift from h er boyfriend. Spent $1,500 from a "reputable" breeder. Anyway, within 2 days she was coughing and still had first few days home "diarrhea." We took her to our vet and they said she had kennel cough and was full of parasites (coccidia). i HAVE 3 OTHER yorkies and 2 big dogs, so I was quite upset, but more worried about this little girl. She ended up on two prescriptions and a calorie supplement to help her strength. She ate well, played ok, just coughed, especially at night time. After a few more days, still coughing really bad, so we took her to the breeders vet, who put her on medicine. Now, we took her agiain last night and tried our 3rd antibiotic. If this doesn't work, they may do a trachial brushing to get the exact bacteria so they can treat it. She's eating ok, playing ok, just sounds absolutely terrible, mostly at night time (when she's sleeping). They also gave her codeine for her cough. The breeder still says none of her other dogs have parasites or kennel cough. Do you believe it? I'm very upset with her. Has anyone had kennel cough on these little guys and would you have any suggestions?

My Snickers had kennel cough the first few days after we brought him home. When I contacted the breeder, she said none of her other dogs had it. The vet put him on a cough med that I had to wear plastic gloves to handle. (Tiny pills). But it did the trick. I believe he was also on an antibiotic. It took about a week, but there was a gradual improvement day by day. I'm sure the puppy will be fine, just need to find the right treatment for her. The breeder contacted me about a week later, and told me that one of her other dogs did come down with kennel cough. Good luck!

Oh my! Im so sorry! Sounds to me like the breeder is full of it! Especially if none of your dogs have anything at all! She had to get it from somewhere! Bless her heart. Atleast she has you to make sure she gets the best care possible.

Cali had kennel cough and coccidia when I got her from a breeder and also paid 1500.00. She gave the kennel cough tot my older pom and it tokkover 3 months to get rid of it. 3 rounds of antibiotics and it fianlly just went away by itself. The oughing was mostly at night and first thing when she woke up. Good luck it will go away.

I'm sorry you're going thru this. We are too with our 14 wk Buddy. The 1st vet said it would resolve on its own. A few days later I went for a 2nd opinion. After 4 days & a lot of panicking :( we started to see improvement on Zithromax. I think kennel cough incubates for 5-10 days(?), so it likely was picked up at the breeders or maybe the breeders vet if the dog had a recent appt. From what little I understand, LOL, this is very easily passed from one dog to another & sometimes from us - sort of like we're the doorknob the dog just sneezed on & the next dog we touch gets exposed from us. She mentioned seeing more resistant strains & more bacterial infections which is why she went straight to Zithro and not to stiffle the cough too much or it might settle into pneumonia. Anyway, Buddy is improving but still not eating too well and coughs after drinking or coming in from the cold. I do hope things improve soon and your other dogs aren't affected the same way. I heard putting him in the bathroom when you take a shower also helps but we didn't need to do that with Buddy, just kept him warm and quiet.

Just want to say one thing.. bronchial washings are not just a simple thing like doing a throat swab on humans. So, if it is done, make sure a specialist is doing it..Good luck and know that we are here for all of you..

Oh my.............I hope this turns out alright!!! I have heard from several on here that it takes some time to go away, but I know where you are coming from....it is just horrible to have to deal with it with a brand new furbaby! Good luck and keep us posted.
