My Darling Sabrina has "enlarged heart"
 
I don't really know what these means! She had been coughing and couldn't seem to stop, and her skin was tight and she seemed bloated, so I took her to the vet. He did x-rays and said she has an enlarged heart and bronchial infection. I'm giving her diuretic, bronchial med., and antibiotic. She's 10.

Has anyone else had this problem? What can I expect? Any information would be appreciated.

Since she started the meds, the cough has stopped at least, but she's off her food, and still so bloated.

We went through this with our last Yorkie, Boog. Our vet always gave him a shot of lasix or did a belly tap to remove some of the fluid for immediate relief. Boog had other medical problems that complicated the heart issue but I've heard with proper medication heart problems can be kept under control for a long time. I'll keep you and Sabrina in my thoughts and prayers.

From what I understand if you've got a sick one, that in itself can cause the enlarged heart. I'd ask your vet to further explain this. Ask the vet if this diagnosis is something that could be caused by the ongoing problem that you're having with the illness (coughing and so forth).

I have had one of my babies xrayed lately and one of the comments by my vet was "his heart isn't enlarged by this yet" so I am really tending to think that this enlarged heart thing isn't really a separate diagnosis. It's a secondary diagnosis related to the cough and congestion that your little one has had. Get rid of the cough and congestion and you'll get rid of the enlarged heart.

Please call back and ask to speak to your vet again. I'd definitely want to clarify this.

One of my friends have had a Yorkie that had enlarged heart . Caillou had medication to take for all his life .

So sorry to hear about your baby. The meds can take care of the problem but as Pat said, they take a while to work. Give your baby Yorkie smoochies from us...

It was just such a shock. We go back in 2 weeks, so I'll ask more questions then and get more info.

She's doing better on the meds. Breathing better, not coughing. I'm hoping it was a bronchial thing and didn't do permanent damage!

After reading your post on the enlarged heart....I have hope that tomorrow when I take my pup to a specialist we can get some relief . Kennel cough has turned into an enlarged heart in a 3 pound 4 month old pup. I pray to God that this condition can be managed. The vet is sending us to Texas A&M specialist in my area first thing in the morning if they have an opening. Keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for the info you gave, it really gives me hope as I said.

MyYorkies2, your baby is young to have such problems, but, (if I am correct) the vets at Texas A&M are the best around for dealing with heart problems. They have performed so many miracles on the rescues from SmallPaws Bichons..I will pray for you, your baby and the hands that treat her. That also includes all of our little sick ones..

Most yorkies have slightly enlarged hearts. Did the vet state how badly enlarged? I had one that was 13 and once I put her on the meds she was fine for another couple of years. But I was very careful to keep an eye on her and take her to the vets incase she needed her meds changed.
Good luck with her. 10 is a little young but it can happen. Also make sure she is not overweight! This puts alot of strain on the heart and cuts a couple years off of their life!

Many different things can cause an enlarged heart.

You really need to learn more about your puppy's condition from your vet.

An enlarged heart and fluid buildup can be a temporary problem or a very serious longterm problem, so please be sure and get whatever tests he recommends. And, be sure and come back and let us know what he says.
