Upset Stomach - is Tums Safe? My 4 year old Yorkie had a big bout of stomach problems yesterday afternoon and we think it may be because we adopted a new yorkie on sunday and everyone's nerves are a little bad - anyway he ate too many treats (every time we gave the new Yorkie some) and he is overweight anyway.. he is better today but I hear alot of grumbling in his stomach. He is still eating his food but we have not given him any more treats... is a Tums safe for a dog? :aimeeyork |
Grumbly tummy. I do not think that is a good idea, and I don't think you should give your little one any kind of medicine before speaking with your vet first. Just give his system a rest that is all it needs. You can have your vet call in a script for liquid pepcid that's what I use for Matise. I give it to him when his tummy is all grumbly you can give it up to 2 times daily. Your vet would know the right dosage for your little one. Good Luck. |
Kara - thank you for the info! I will wait until tomorrow to see if he seems back to normal.. if not I will call the vet.. He does tend to eat when he is nervous so I think he has just eaten too much since his new brother has been here! |
medicine I give my Peanut a half of a Pepcid (5mg)every 12 hours for upset tummy |
I don't think there is anything in TUMS that would hurt a dog. But, of course, they shouldn't eat a bottle of them. My pup has eaten Tums several times. He thinks they are candy. I've never worried about it, and he's never gotten sick. Carol Jean |
When Baby was vomiting I gave her a little Pepto Bismol. She didn't like it at all, but she didn't vomit after that! :p |
I found this on the web. Tums for calcium carbonate requirements Question: I need to include calcium carbonate in my dogs homecooked diet, but have yet to find it except in the form of Tums. I have read that Tums can be detrimental to pets. Is this true? Answer:To the best of my knowledge, there is no problem with using unflavored Tums (tm) in dogs for calcium carbonate requirements. One Tums tablet contains 0.5gm of calcium carbonate. It is also possible to find calcium carbonate as the calcium ingredient in some human calcium supplements. I don't know the names but you could probably pick them out by reading the ingredients. Mike Richards, DVM 8/3/2001 |
I mentioned that my dog has often eaten a couple of Tums - that were supposed to be for me....and, has never had a problem. I am super careful with my medicines (only premarin and provera) but, never worried about Tums and obviously haven't been too careful with these. Anyway - I found this article written by a vet: ----------------------------------- To the best of my knowledge, there is no problem with using unflavored Tums (tm) in dogs for calcium carbonate requirements. One Tums tablet contains 0.5gm of calcium carbonate. Mike Richards, DVM The same site later said that Tums often help some dogs with chronic arthritis. ----------------------------------- So - apparently - they are safe for dogs. Carol Jean |
I give mine peppermint candy. I bite off a little piece and it settles her stomach in just minutes... If it's throwing up, diahrea etc., Iuse Pepto Bismol. The vet said that was safe. |
I know that you can give them 1/2 of a Pepcid AC. Zeus' vet recommended that for him when he had pancreatitis. |
Plain boiled rice can settle a tummy :-) |
I wonder if dogs ever get heartburn! (I know from personal experience that this can be no fun.) If they do - a Tums would certainly help them - and we know it wouldn't hurt them. Carol Jean |
my pup has a sour stomach diarhhea and vomit a little this week ,she got her period, and I thought this was because of that, but now I'm not sure? |
after reading i gave a drop od pepto lets hope that works! |
I give my 15 lb. Papillion 1/2 a Pepto-Bismol tablet. Since Baron is only 7 pounds I give him a 1/4 tablet... Hope this helps...:) |
