salivating, groaning, sick yorkie? please help!! We have an 8mnth old female yorkie who is always ill. It first started off with vomitting and has now progressed to extreme salivating, pawing the walls and she seems to be deaf and blind. We have taken her to a vet twice and were told that her blood sugar levels are unstable and that we should give her honey which we have done. It seemed to work the first time but not anymore and these episodes are becoming more frequent and seem to subside after out 6hrs. We are at our wits end and any advice would be greatly appreciated? Thank You Michelle Y |
I think you should go to another vet and find out what the specific problem is. The only way to help the yorkie is to know how to treat him. Good luck and I hope that you find out the problem. |
OMGosh that's so sad for her....Has your vet discussed any tests with you to find out why this is happening ? Is sure doesn't sound like honey will help her ....and if she were mine - she'd be at a new vet in a heartbeat.... Good luck with her... |
I would have her Bile Acid level tested her symptoms are some that could be a possible liver shunt. My Cali is being tested and retested as we speak. Please read the threads on Liver Shunt. JMO but she needs to be diagnosed soon. Hopefully it is something minor but better to be safe. |

illness This is just awful to hear..I would be a basket case. She sounds like she has some type of neurological problem, who knows..you must find another vet and if not I would rather see this poor creature go to Yorkie Heaven then groaning in pain..something is terrible wrong. |
Agree with all. Get to a new vet ASAP. Have a blood panel done. Something is very wrong. Poor little thing. I hate when they are sick. :( |
IMO no decent vet would send you home with nothing more to go on than to give your baby honey. Find a new vet ASAP! |

Even if the tests come back normal or something else, piece of mind is priceless, and you would know exactly what was wrong and how to treat it and where to go from there. Here is some info on Liver Shunts taken from this website http://www.vet.utk.edu/clinical/sacs/shunt/faq.shtml "What are the clinical signs of a liver shunt? Clinical signs are often seen at a young age and include small stature, poor muscle development, behavioral abnormalities (circling, disorientation, unresponsiveness, staring into space, head pressing), seizures, and quiet demeanor. Other less common signs include drinking or urinating too much, apparent blindness, diarrhea, and vomiting. In some animals the signs are associated with eating protein. Other animals are diagnosied when they take a long time recovering from anesthestics (i.e. barbiturates) or sedatives (i.e. acepromazine). Some animals show no signs until they are older, when they develop bladder and kidney infections and stones." Quote:
Hope this info helps. Good luck to you and your little one. |
How large is your baby? Has the doctor diagnosed a neurological disorder? seizures? Sometimes excess salivating is related to seizures. But given the history and the age LS is a real consideration. Have a full blood panel done then followed by the bile acid salts in a week or so. It is always sad when one of our babies is sick and cannot tell us what hurts. I will say prayers for you and her.. |
Poor baby! She must be so miserable not being able to tell you what is wrong! I feel so bad! I agree that you should find another vet immediatly and do the tests that the others here have recommended. When you go to look for a new vet, name sure he has experience in small breeds. Good luck, and please keep us informed as we will be praying for you both tonight! |
oh my goodness I have a Yorkie-7 mo and Im so glad he doesnt have any symptoms of this ....My ? is can cats have liver shunts? I know this doesnt relate to my yorkie...but I have 3 cats also...and sometimes one of mine acts that way! Sorry just curious...ps...I really hope your furry baby gets well real soon ;) |
Poor darling. Your baby sounds miserable. The part about the "pawing at the walls" breaks my heart. I just wish they could talk to us. I agree with others, fire your vet and get a new one ASAP. Please keep us posted. We all care. |
Dear Ladies, Thanks megatons. You've been more help than the vet that's for sure. I've been on the internet for hours but there are so many sites these days it becomes quite tedious trying to find a name to the symtom. I'll start immediately looking for a new vet because I can't imagine not having my poohbaby around. She's 1.7 kg (miniature and the runt of the pack) and full of attitude :aimeeyork |
