How much children's benadryl for my Yorkie? Fever Gracie went to the vet yesterday and got her annual rabie and distemper shots. Vet said she maybe feverish for the next 48-72 hours. To give her half baby asprin or some benadryl. Forgot how much benadryl vet said to give her. We gave her baby asprin yesterday and did not seem to help. She is 3.6 lbs. Don't want to over dose her.She is just looking sickly and laying in her bed. Makes me feel terrible that my little furbaby is not feeling well. Thanks, Heather |
I would play it safe and try to get in touch with Gracie's vet. If not available maybe the emergency vet ?? Giving the amounts of medi to the fur babies is NOT something I am comfy with. But I am comfy giving hugs to Gracie and hoping she feels better very soon! :p |
I'm not sure why he said to give her benadryl?? Benadryl is not for fever!! I would let 24 hours go by and if she doesn't seem to improve a lot, I would take her back to the Vet. Furbabies that small should not be given two vaccinations at one time. At least that is my opinion. I'm sure she willl be fine later on today, though :p |
A first aid sheet I have says 3ccs of Benadryl. You could always call your vet and check also. |
my vet said 1 MG per pound. but this was for car sickness. makes them drousy. I think better check with your vet to be on the safe side. Just as human doctors not all agree on treatments. |
I am definitely not comfortable giving human meds to my little guy, so I would call your vet again....doesn't hurt! My first aid book for pets says 1mg per lb. every 6-8 hours (as an antihistamine - Benadryl) and for Tylenol (pain reliever) it says to ask your vet. Good luck and I hope she feels better soon! I have the same information as the rest of you guys and confirmed with a pharmacist that compounds for vets...1 mg per pound. Using a standard concentration of 12.5 mg per 5 ml, you would give her 0.6 ml. This is only using the above concentration of childrens benadryl, not any vet preparation. This will help with the histamine response initiated by the vaccinations. Good luck. |
Yep, I went back to my very old nurses' calculation methods and came up with 0.6 ml or cc. The strength of 12.5mg in 5 mls---0.6 would give your baby the proper dose just as Carolina Yorkie said. Everything I have read, and the research in my vets' manuals, say that Tylenol(acetaminophen) is not recommended for dogs as even at recommended dosages there is potential for kidney, liver, GI and blood problems. The Vet Desk Reference says that aspirin in the appropriate dose is safe in both dogs and cats.. I am not saying to give these meds to your animals without checking with your vet. Also, it might be a good idea to space out any further vaccines so that there is at least 2 weeks between distemper vaccines and rabies or others. Our Yorkies are small and sometimes they get treated the same as large dogs and it is too much for them.. Hope she is better soon. |
