Blind Yorkie My Daisy (11 years old) was bumping into walls and I took her to the vet. He informed me that she is totally Blind. I’m devastated. It came on so fast. I have an appointment with an eye specialist for a consultation but he says that her blindness cannot be reversed and that she can live a full life in her condition. Anyone else here is dealing with blindness. |
My daughter has a blind yorkie, she went blind just like you said yours did, very quickly at around the same time, eleven years old, she is now 15 and she going strong. She still bumps into things, but if she is in a place that she knows she really has no problems. Good luck with your baby. |
Thank you, this so new to us and we don’t what to do for her. She is trained and doesn’t have accidents but now she is peeing on the floor. Is it because the blindness is new to her? |
Teacher her the bell trick, put a bell of some sort near the door where you bring her out, ring it every time you take her out, she'll eventually figure it out. My daughter's dog just scratches on the glass door, but since she is an older lady, she also wears a diaper a lot. Good luck with her. <3 |
My now passed girl was blind and deaf, she lived that why for 3 or 4 years. As long as you don't move any furniture around she will be fine. She knows her way around your house, moving any furniture will confuse her. Peeing anywhere can be a sign of incontinence not caused by blindness, see your vet about that. My pup did the same thing, peed where ever she was. I was not aware dogs could become incontinence until I joined YT, by that time she was gone. Had I known I would have seen if the vet had something to control it. Ppl may advise using a diaper, before doing that I would take her to the vet, there may be a med to control this. Please update us if you see your vet. My pup passed at age of 17 years old, living blind and deaf. |
Our Ginger was also blind and deaf. She did very well all the way up to her death. The one thing the messed her up for a little while was when we moved and the house was basically the reverse layout of our previous house. She adjusted very well though. She never had an incontinence issue though. Our Maggie got incontinent late in life though. Towards the end we had to keep a diaper on her. |
For what it’s worth, my Jax has been vision impaired and hearing impaired since birth. He’s only (not quite) four; his conditions are congenital. But he doesn’t have much difficulty, other than a tendency to lose track of his toys if he’s playing energetically and tosses them too far or occasionally barking at sunbeams because he can see the flicker of light & movement and doesn’t know what’s causing it. Keeping him safe is a little trickier than with other dogs, but we manage. |
Blind and Deaf Deuce This has just happened this weekend. Deuce's right eye implant has now failed. I suspected low night vision for a while and the vet confirmed that. He is now totally blind since he has a cataract in his left eye. We went with a cataract surgery 4 years ago and it gave him vision for a while. He is also deaf so this will be a challenge. Right now he's having a tough time but I'm hopeful he will adjust. He will be 14 next month. No more surgeries for his 5 lb body. I am probably having a harder time than he is right now. The one thing that does infuriate me is that I have not been able to get a vet visit in a timely manner. His ophthalmologist visit is in two weeks and his vet visit is in three weeks but I'm on a cancellation list. |

Deuce should adjust to his vision loss. Make sure to keep everything as is...moving things in the home confuses the pups when they cannot see. Keeping you and Deuce in my thoughts. |
My Daisy also suddenly went blind at 14. She adjusted very well but unfortunately she passed away in January. |
