Is rehab needed after Luxating Patella surgery? My 1 1/2 year old Bentley had LP surgery nearly 3 weeks ago. We were given some exercises to help him strengthen his legs by the surgery center. As of yet, he is not able to do much more than walk for a couple of minutes and then he collapses. Since he had both legs done, I was told it may take longer for him to recover. I would love to hear from others who have had experience rehabilitating their babies. Did you use a professional to help with the process? What did you do at home and how quickly did your dog return to a more normal state? Thanks in advance. |
It seems like forever ago when Callie had hers done. We used the rehab place that was at the same place as the orthopedic surgeons office. After the incision was healed we did the water treadmill and they gave me exercises to do at home like we started at 2 5 minute walks a day for a week and then it increased weekly until it was 15 minutes and then we added things like stepping over a broom stick laying on the ground and stuff. |
Thanks for your feedback. How long did it take for your dog to return to normal? |

I knew it wouldn't be easy based on all of my research, but I am hopeful that Bentley will have a long and pain free life after his recovery. Thanks much for your comments. |
Sounds like he is coming along. Three weeks is still early. I have had many CCL tears repaired and never had to do physical therapy afterwards. That said, I also have never done both knees at one time. I think it is unusual for them to tear both at the same time. I have seen some people repair LP on both legs at one time. I thought you had had CCL repairs, but this post looks like it was for LP. Physical therapy can't hurt, but I am not sure it is totally necessary. |
