Vomiting & Diarrhea My little Keeva woke up early this morning with vomiting and diarrhea. She is generally a very healthy girl so I'm not sure what caused this. She is only just over 4 lbs so I didn't mess around and took her straight to a 24 hr vet clinic near my home. They said she didn't have a temperature and it was likely a gastro upset. Gave her a fluid injection and an injection of Cerenia for the vomiting and prescribed 5 days of Metronidazole for the diarrhea, plus a bland diet and a probiotic for the next several days. Since she's been home, she has had a couple instances of diarrhea and doesn't have much of an appetite. She is drinking well, which is good. But she seems more lethargic and shaky than when I first took her to the vet's office this morning. Should I be concerned? I know that lethargy and muscle tremors can be a side effect of Cerenia. I just want her to feel better as soon as possible. Thanks everyone! |
Just seeing this. How is Keeva doing today? |
Hi there, thanks for the response and sorry for the delay! It's been a few weeks of 2 steps forward, 1 step back. After about a week of normal behaviour and bowel movements, she had another day of loose stool and some vomiting. Then another week of normality and yesterday some loose stool. This morning she wasn't very interested her breakfast and was pacing and shaking after eating so I could tell she was nauseous, but she didn't vomit. Seems to be okay now. I've been keeping her on a bland diet of chicken and rice with a probiotic. Tomorrow she sees her vet to go over a fecal analysis we did last week. Hopefully that will give us some answers! I don't know why this keeps recurring! Any theories? |
Unfortunately there are so many different GI issues in yorkies. I would never try to guess. I have been through a lot with them....often you end up having to scope them to find out what the culprit is. There is a GI test that is sent to Texas A & M that often will help diagnose ...here is a link about it: https://vetmed.tamu.edu/gilab/ I am sorry I didn't see this before. How did the vet visit go and how is Keeva? |
I am sorry I didn't see this before. How did the vet visit go and how is Keeva?[/QUOTE] The vet visit was good. The fecal test came back with no concerns, so that was a relief. She is back on the metro for a couple weeks at least. Still doing the bland diet and trying to work our way into a hypoallergenic food our vet recommended. We haven’t done bloodwork or ultrasounds or anything else yet. That would be the next step if we can’t get this sorted in the next couple weeks. Keeva is happy though, behaviour and appetite are normal and good. So I’m happy to see that! |
I have used Royal Canin Hypoallergenic and my pups liked it. There are others.... So happy she is feeling better. Wow...I am surprised no bloodwork. I would definitely recommend that because, while unusual, things do show up that are better caught early. |
