liver shunt.. Please advise! Hi, need advise please. My little one is 9 months and weighs 1.6kg during pre bloodwork before getting spayed, results came back as possible liver shunt issue, seeing specialist on the 6th. Have been advised not to do surgery - spaying or liver surgery? Need advise from mom's who have babies with liver shunt disease, what do you advise and what do we need to do from our side...diet etc? So Stressed |
Well it depends on the type of shunting he has. if it is just the one shunt in the portal vein surgery can be done to correct. My Charlie did not have this type, he had many tiny shunts through out his liver that could not be corrected with surgery. He hd to eat a very vegetarian dies (Royal Canin Hepatic) he was allowed chicken and could eat regular vegetables. Charlies was pretty severe in that he did have seizures that I treated with phenobarbital when they occurred. He lived a very long life with me and and passed at 16 years old do to other health issues. My only suggestion would be to make sure you have a vet that really knows about shunting, it makes a world of difference. Unless your pup is to sick it shouldn't keep him from being spayed at least when he is better. |

Until you know details try not to get too upset. If she has not shown symptoms, it may not be a shunt. If it is, it can be repaired surgically and usually very successful. |
