13 year old yorkie with kidney disease Charlie is my 13 year old yorkie with kidney disease. She was diagnosed roughly 2 years ago. She has also battled chronic pancreatitis for the past 4 years. We have gotten numerous diet consultations/recommendations from UTCVM over the years but she has preferred a combination of the Renal Support D, KD Chicken Stew and most recently the Renal Support T. Unfortunately in the past 10 days she had grown weary eating the RSD and KD food so we made the change to the RST. This RST she seems to enjoy but in the past 10 days her BUN went from 46 to 69 and her CRE went from 2.2% to 2.3%. This change in bloodwork also occurred with her getting 3 subQ fluid treatments over a 10 day window. The RST has a higher protein/fat concentration compared to the others so we’re going to try and wean her back from that and onto a pate food which compares similarly in protein/fat concentration as the RSD and KD which she’s eaten well over the past year and a half. Her activity level has been good and after the subQ fluids her spunk level gets back to an 8 year old level. Does anyone have anything that has helped their yorkies that have battled this problem ? |
So sorry your pup is having so many problems. I have no advice but hope others on YT can help. |
Sorry I don't have experience with this. But I know finding kidney friendly and pancreatitis friendly diets are often hard (often kidney diets are too high in fat). Maybe talk to your vet about JustFoodForDogs. They have some RX diets that MAY be appropriate? https://www.justfoodfordogs.com/vet-support-meals/ or if you could homecook, check out BalanceIT and consult a board certified nutritionist. |
It is indeed difficult to manage pups with pancreatitis and renal disease. I have a foster now who has the same issues, plus a heart murmur. When she was in ICU some time back they put her on RC Vegetarian canned and RC PW moderate calorie. She really likes both of those foods but does switch from day to day. I offer both at each feeding. She also has a phosphorus binder added to her food daily. Two of my personal pups have been in stage 3 renal failure for a year now. They are also on the phosphorus binder. They are on RC Renal Support T and love it! Neither of them have a history of pancreatitis. I do give them Entyce daily which has helped immensely with their appetite. I tried mirtazapine but that didn't seem to help ... I have had success in the past with it with others. So, probably the only thing I can suggest is an appetite stimulant if you have not yet tried it. |
Thank you for the input. Charlie had more bloodwork today and her numbers have increased again unfortunately. Her BUN was 46 2/26 and it’s 74 now. Her Cre was 2.2% on 2/26 and is 2.4% now. They believe there is possibly a digestive or urinary factor at play because her symptoms don’t match kidney values. More blood work tomorrow. We’re hoping for better news. |

Please keep us posted. |
Unfortunately 2 days ago we had to say goodbye to Charlie with the help of our vet. She went peacefully with my wife and I holding her. She was 1 month shy of her 14th birthday. Her ultrasound showed no digestive issues and kidneys that were poorly formed and almost unrecognizable according to the the internal med specialist. I wouldn’t want anyone who has a pet with kidney disease to feel hopeless. There are numerous food options from Hills and RC. The Renal Support D and KD stew that kept our girl going 16 months longer than our vet had expected. The UTCVM (Tennessee vet school) has vet specialists who will create specific diets based upon you dogs needs. We had 6 different variations created through them along the journey that helped us as well. We are going to miss our baby terribly but we’re truly blessed to have had her in our lives. Thank you to the yorkie talk forum for being such a great resource for our babies. |
Words cannot express how very sorry I am for the lose of your sweet Charlie (((hugs))) |
I am so very sorry for your loss of your beloved Charlie. I know it doesn't help your pain right now, but I just want to say that she was one of the lucky ones to be so loved and well cared for. Hopefully the wonderful memories of her long life will soon help to heal your hearts. |
I am so very sorry for your loss! Charlie was blessed to have been loved by you, and may your happy memories shared together bring you comfort. |
