Possible retained placenta. My Yorkie had 2 pups Sunday and today is Thursday. The second puppies placenta never came out I called the vet Monday to see about a clean out shot and he said it probably passed on its own overnight and to just keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn’t show signs of infection. She is eating fine but only if I hand feed her and has light brownish discharge but other then that acting pretty normal. How long do I have to worry about an infection if she didn’t pass the placenta? |
This article gives the symptoms of a retained placenta. https://wagwalking.com/condition/retained-afterbirth However, you shouldn’t use a “wait and see” approach if you think there’s any chance your dog has a retained placenta. It’s too dangerous. You should have her examined by your vet. |
I called twice and both times he didn’t seem concerned very much but he is a great vet dealt with him for years and he has helped with litters in the past. How long would it before those systems started to show? |

It seems to me that you’re concerned, which I would hope would be a good enough reason for your vet to do an exam to make sure all is well. |
