Sick doggie that is coughing / sneezing / choking 1 Attachment(s) Hi there. I am very happy that I found this forum. I am glad to be here and thank you ahead of time. =) I am trying everything possible out of desperation. My little "Billie" is a female Yorkie. She weights 7 lbs. and is about 13 years old. She has had most of her teeth pulled a few years back.....I think she only has about 3 teeth left. Those were not pulled because they needed a special dentist because they did not want to break her jaw while doing them. She has always been VERY healthy and super active. Until 2 months ago. Out of nowhere two months ago, she started doing something and it is very difficult to know what is going on. Is is kind of a cough/sneeze/choke. It is impossible to tell if the clog is in her nose or her throat...but either way, something is getting clogged and then she cant get air. Sometimes it seems more like a sneeze and that might actually be something different. She has been to 3 different vets and the only things that we know after the 3 visits are that she has... 1) A slight heart murmur. The first vet said that it was nothing to be concerned about....but the last one said that it could be more... 2) Partial Tracheal Collapse (was told it isn't to bad and I will attach the X-ray photo) 3) Periodontal Disease (from her molar that will need to come out). She was put on anti biotics after her 2nd vet visit and that did not help. They also checked her little nose to see if anything was stuck inside and nothing was. Every time she goes in to see a vet she does not display these symptoms/actions unfortunately and they just send her home. Once home....she does these things every one in while. About 2 times per hour......and sometimes it is so bad that she can not get air. Currently she is set to have a cardiac ultrasound in 2 weeks to see what is going on with her heart....but it is very difficult to get through each day right now watching her choke and not get air. Hopefully I can post a few videos and maybe one of you lovely people has experienced something similar or at least has some advise. I keep spending the money to fix her but we are getting nowhere. =( I really appreciate the help of you all and I will post some very happy photos of Billie soon. I just had to get this desperate emergency post out of the way. PS - Is there a way to post the video?? Without seeing it, I doubt that this will make any sense.... |
Welcome to YT, sorry it's under these circumstances Your girl may just have collapsed Trachea with they way you describe looks like she is not getting enough air. I would try to capture a video on your cell phone to show your vet what's going on. Collapsed Trachea can be treated, you need to speak to your vet about various options that would be available for your lil girl. Please keep us posted  |
I have many videos but cant seem to upload one to here. They said they could put a stint in her traceach if needed. |

Is a stent the only option your vet gave you. |
So far for the trachea problem yes....if bad enough they said that they can put a stent in. I'll upload some videos fro YouTube after work. Thanks for the idea. |
I have had many pups with varying degrees of collapsed tracheas. I have a couple of threads here on YT with suggestions...I will look for them. The x-ray you posted does not show a severe collapse BUT that does not mean it is not collapsing. The only definitive way to diagnose collapsed trachea is by flouroscopy because it shows inspiration and expiration, showing how the wall of the trachea is holding up. X-rays do sometimes show it, but not always!! There are many treatment options for it....has she been given any meds specifically for the cough? Hycodan cough syrup is usually the first one the vets RX. One of my fosters has intermittent problems with coughing at night so my vet has ordered hycodan for him. There are other treatments/meds. Lomotil is a very interesting one and does help some of them. It is an anti diarrheal for people but works for CT. You might want to ask your vet about it. Some of them benefit from prednisone. I don't know that I would want to put a stent in a 13 year old....and I certainly wouldn't do it unless all other options were tried first. Since she isn't constantly coughing, I think perhaps you can get this controlled. (I hope so because it is difficult to see them have trouble breathing). Keeping them cool and stress free is very helpful. Walking outside in the heat is bad and collars when walking are bad...keep a harness on her for walking! I had a pup who would have periodic bad episodes that were relieved by taking him out to my car and letting the air conditioning vent blow in his face! Let me look for some of my threads to see if I may have missed something. |
There are a TON of threads about CT on this forum. Here is a post I made that has some other options.... https://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/4747924-post13.html Here is a link that may be helpful: https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-p...llapse-in-dogs I see they mention Bupranex...that is also a very effective med for it. If your vet is not familiar with medical management options, I would consult with a specialist. You can find one at: www.acvim.org |
you guys are THE BEST . I will check out after work . thank you so much |
I am not an expert on health, but my rescue Dixie has had a cough for over a year and she was diagnosed with Degenerative Valve Disease with Normal Chamber Dimension. At this time she is only taking hydrocodone for her cough. I don't know if this is any information you can use but thought I would throw it out as another piece of information that could or could not relate. On a different note, I want to wish you the best as you find out more from the vet tests and appointments. |

Hopefully the echo that is scheduled will help diagnose this pup's problem. |
She was actually given and is taking Hydrocodone....it seems to help but I think it is only because it calms her down and makes her drowsy so she relaxes and sleeps a bit. But I could be wrong. =) |

Good luck with everything, we too have problems with collapsing trachea in our 17 year old but as he is epileptic he can not take some of the meds so we have been given another med to try , it’s horrible seeing like this , we are thinking of you. |
Sending well wishes! My heart goes out to you. This is so difficult. We are sending you well wishes and doggie kisses. I hope that your baby will be healed soon! My Chibi is having similar problems right now. He coughs and his breathing rate is quicker that usual. We went to the vet yesterday and they looked at his lungs, heart and internal organs. They looked good. A radiologist will look at his x-ray more carefully. The vet didn't think that the cough was a tracheal cough. They gave him hydrocodone and antibiotics. I will let you know what we find out in hope to help you out. |
