Renal Biopsy Has anyone had to get a renal biopsy on their fur baby? It looks like Thumper may possibly need one. I have been working with his vet as lately his urinalysis has not been coming back as normal. We just did a UPC Test it showed the ratio as 2.2 which according to her is high. Her thoughts right now are to adjust his meds and repeat the test next month. However, she said if the protein in the urine does not decrease than it is time to see a specialist. She said if I want I can get a renal biopsy but only a specialist can do that because of complications. I looked online but did not see too many results with all the complications or reasons to get/not get the test done. Most of what I read was in what I call medical speak and not easily understood by me. I wanted to get opinions on the biopsy and if I should put Thumper through the procedure. He is only 9 years old so a lot of life left. Though he has other issues like high BP and Cushings which complicates matters. |
Has a urine culture been done to rule out infection? That is usually the first step with protein in the urine. I have honestly never heard of doing a renal biopsy on a dog. Not saying it could not be done, but I doubt the value of it overall. I think they can diagnose and treat without doing that but a specialist would best answer that. I have had pups with PLN (protein losing nephropathy) and they all were on meds and the blood pressure needs to be monitored. The fact he has cushings may weigh in on all of this......I would definitely see an internal med specialist. |

My vet said none of her patients have ever opted for the biopsy but it is always an option she said. If the change in meds lowers the UPC ratio than I will just contine to montior him. However, if there is no change next month than she would like him to see a specialists or in the alternative she would consult with one about other treatment options. There is BluePearl Veterniary Specialists done the road from me but they are not allowing owners in with their pets at the moment due to Covid. I don't feel 100% comfortable leaving Thumper to be evaluated without me there. I also would feel better if I could consult with the vet face to face than over the phone as I feel I sometimes miss something over the phone. I trust my vet as she is not agressive or a pill pusher. This is the first time she told me we have to change his diet and meds. Usually it is let's repeat this test or try something else. For the next month the plan is to have in on the following K/D Diet Fish oils 2.5 mg of Enaparil 2x a day 15 mg Clopidogrel (plavix) 1x a day 1/2 tablet of Amlodipine 1x a day |
Sounds like a plan. Hopefully he will be just fine! :) |
