UPC Test Has anyone had a UPC Test (Urine Protein Creatin Ratio) test done on their dog? The vet is recommending it because all the blood work is showing normal kidney function but his urinalysis keeps coming back not good. We have done three urinalysis recently and it keeps showing protein. The vet mentioned that there is another way for kidney disease to have kidney disease but it doesn't always show up on blood work. She said she did not reccomend the test before because technically he is already on the treatment medication (Enaparil) as he uses it for blood pressure. For the next three days I need to have him pee in a cup first thing in the morning and than drop all three samples off at the vet's office. I probably will not have the results until some time next week but nervous. He just turned 9 and he is my heart. I love him dearly. As he gets older I think about the inevitable of losing him and it breaks my heart. Just wanted to hear other experience with the UPC and if it came out positive what treatment was recommended? He is already on Hill's Science K/D Diet and gets no treats to avoid an pancrititis issues. |
I am so sorry I missed this post. I responded just now on the other one. I have had many UPC tests done as I have had pups with PLN (protein losing nephropathy). Enaliapril is given for PLN .. but there are also other meds that can be added if their UPC or B/P rise. I personally would do a consult with an internal med specialist. BTW be careful with the KD ... if he also has a problem with pancreatitis I believe it is fairly high fat. Often it is a challenge to find a diet for kidney pups who also have GI issues. |

I will probably end up consulting with a specialist as that is what my vet is leaning towards. We are trying a change in med at the moment but if this does not work the speacialist will be next to see about other treatment options. I will see what my doctor thinks about the food. Right now her biggere concern is the protien in the urine and wants him on the K/D diet. He likes it and when we tried changing it he had GI issues. |
