12 yo Yorkie not herself Although I have lurked on this board for years, this is my first post. You all are such a caring, encouraging community! Our baby, Macy, is 12 years old and has been very spunky until about a month ago. She had a spa day at the groomer. Within 24 hours, her right lower eyelod was swollen, red, and oozing. Drops resolved the issue. However, she has deteriorated to the point hubby was convinced several times she was dead. A vet visit with complete blood work indicated her thyroid is slow and her hearing is gone. Vision is on its way out as well. After two days on the meds, she was much better, but within the week, she returned to sleeping all the time, easily startled, decreased appetite, and seems genuinely sad. My question: Is it typical for a senior dog to have such a drastic change? Thanks for any insight. Teresa in NC |
Maybe she's dealing w/some pain from arthritis or some place she can still disguise it, as most dog's won't show pain due to old, inbred, canine fears of showing weakness/illness/injury for fear of being abandoned or attacked by their pack. Also, she could have an as-yet diagnosed disease process setting in, so just watch her closely and don't overtax her, vet her again in 4 - 6 weeks or so for another recheck of all systems w/full labs again. Could just be early dementia. |

Dog food Check her food. Sometimes food can cause reactions. |
