Help Hypoglycemia puppy I have a 9 week old Yorkie puppy, she weighs 1.1 pounds. July 4, 2020 her sugar dropped and she was lethargic rushed her to emergency vet where she is still. She eats but they can't keep her sugar up, they tested for liver shunt and she has none. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? We have been giving her Nutracal 4 times a day, doesn't help. If anyone has any ideas please help |
I don’t have any first hand experience with hypoglycemia attacks, but I read quite a bit about it when Jax was very small and at risk. There can be many contributing factors: stress, exercise, cold environment (sitting in the air conditioning?), parasites, certain diseases (liver disease, Addison’s).... I’ve read — although I don’t know whether it’s true — that overuse of Nutrical can actually cause hypoglycemic attacks. Again, I don’t know whether it’s true. There seem to be strong pro-regular-use and anti-regular-use opinions among yorkie breeders on that subject, so you should follow your vet’s advice. I hope your baby stabilizes. |
I'm sorry that I cannot offer help but I will be thinking of you, and your sweet baby. Please keep us updated. (((hugs))) |
You said the puppy is still at the vet but also said you are giving the puppy Nutracal; so, I am not sure where she is. Honestly, a puppy that young and that small should still be with her mother. If it is possible, I would get her back with her mom until she is bigger and older. Ideally at least 12 weeks old. She needs to be fed every 2 hours. So, who has her and what is she eating and how is she eating it? What tests have been done that they have decided she does not have a shunt? |
Is there an update on this puppy please? |
The person never logged back in after their original post and didn't see any replies which is disheartening. Hope the pup is doing ok. |
Me too, 9 weeks old, 1.1 Lbs with hypoglycemia!!!! |
Any news on this tiny baby? |
