Senior Yorkie with Kidney and GI Troubles First time posting here. Any experience with these issues or advice would be really appreciated! My wife and I have a senior yorkie of 15.5 years. She was diagnosed with kidney disease and had a 2.5 day long bout of passing mucous covered loose stools with streaks of bright red blood. We took her to the vet and they weren't able to determine the cause of the blood covered stools (negative for parasites) and prescribed the antibiotic metronidazole for the stools and a phosphate binder to help her kidneys. She took one days worth of the metronidazole and phosphate binder and immediately stopped eating, drinking any water (which she never does!) or passing any stools (although she was still alert and energetic). We were alarmed and stopped the metronidazole immediately which the vet agreed was the right call. The vet thinks it's related to nausea although she didn't throw up. About 12 hours after the last dose of the metrodinazole, she drank water and ate (although less than she normally does). She's sleeping a bit more today and hasn't passed a stool in about 30 hours. Has anyone had any similar experiences or things we should watch out for? We may bring her back to the vet or the ER for more fluids if she doesn't drink enough today. Thank you! |

If she had diarrhea it would be normal for her to go a day or two without pooing because it has to build back up. Did the vet do blood work to like check for pancreatitis? Does she eat dry food or wet food? If it is wet food then there is some water in it but if it’s dry food maybe try adding water to it. It definitely sounds like another vet visit maybe necessary. |
Fluids My friend Kim is having her senior yor,kie get fluids 3 times a week. Also the diet needs to be changed. Hopefully your vet can work this out for your precious dog. |
Update Thanks everyone for the responses. Some good news is she is drinking and eating more. She managed to pass two stools after about 40 hours of constipation. Neither had blood, wasn't diarrhea but still had some mucus on it. Hopefully this means she's on the mend! Blood work was done but they did not test specifically for pancreatitis. She has elevated phosphorous and creatine/bun levels. We're tweaking her diet to be more kidney friendly and giving a more bland home-made chicken rice/veggies. Before she was eating a home-made wet food diet as well. We're planning on learning how to do sub-q fluids at home just in case we may need to in the future. She's not the best at the vet lol. We still don't know exactly what it was/is but hopefully some diet changes and TLC will do the trick. |
Thank you for the update, so glad your little one is improving, these lil guys are so precious. |
My previous Yorkie had renal failure toward the end of her life. We treated and medicated as long as her quality of life was supported. And it was for many years. But everything changed when she began to have pain that could not be managed for her comfort. For me that was the changing point. Good luck with your baby! |
Happy to hear the positive update! Hope things continue to go well. |
