Back Legs Are Giving Out My little Hugo Boss is 15 years and 4 months. He had LP surgery on both legs approximately 10 years ago. About 2 wks ago he started holding up his back right leg. I took him to the vet and they said it's likely due to his arthritis and he may have tweaked it. They put him on gabapentin for the pain. The last few days the left leg is giving him issues. So back to vet b/c both legs are having issues and he could barely walk. They gave him gabapentin and tramedol. He has good and bad moments, feel like it's been more bad than good. He let out 2 yelps yesterday which he never has done when he's had pain. He's such a might dog - 2015 anal gland carcinoma surgery and 20 rounds of radiation, 2017 another cancer surgery on front paw, 2018 anal gland carcinoma came back and he had surgery again. Age is finally catching up to him and I hate it. What do I do if he doesn't get better and can start walking? I feel like I have a difficult decision to make soon. Any advise is appreciated. :/ |
I really don’t have any advise. I generally look at quality of life and if they have very little or are in pain then I really have to think about what is right for them. I’m so sorry, it’s not easy. |
Thank you Lovetodream88. You're right and that's what I've been saying to myself lately. I of course hope he gets better but it's hard to see him in pain/struggle when the pain medications wear off. Other than the legs he is alert, has a pretty good appetite even though he's lost a pound or two. Quality of life and not being in pain - the 2 most important things I keep reminding myself of. |
Dog I would look into CBD oil. Dogs in pain are having relief using cbd. If he is eating and you get that pain under control no reason to let him go . Get ahold of a holistic vet and find out if this will help. |
Hi Sandy - Thank you for taking the time to respond. It’s been rough. He’s been getting CBD since March for lymph nodes in his abdomen. I still give it to him twice a day. I’m sure that has helped his back legs since it seems like this happened out of no where. I have an appt with his vet again this Wednesday for a thorough exam to make sure nothing serious is going on. I’ve been looking online for holistic options all day today. Think it’s a good idea too. |
I have no advice and can only send healing  and :hands: to both of you. Sounds like you are an incredible pet parent. Watching your beloved furkid age is just gut wrenching. I hope that little Hugo Boss rebounds and shares many more happy times with you. |
Chattiesmom - Thank you. I'm just doing whatever I can so he's comfortable. We have an appointment now on Thursday with the Surgeon for a thorough exam to see if something else is going on. He's too old for surgery and I can't put him through that at this age. It really is gut wrenching - you put it best. |
Our thoughts are with you! |
Thank you Nanajoy... He's doing a little better... walking more but still not putting a lot of pressure on his back left leg. Hoping Golden Paste Hip & Joint supplement will help him. |
