Yorkie fell off top of sofa My 12 yr old 4.6 lb Yorkie fell off the top of sofa, it happen so fast, don't know why he was up there, he was making yelping noises I picked him up wrap in blanket and took him to the vet emergency. Xrays were taken no broken bones. His vet gave him a shot of rimaly and told me to give him Gabapentin at home. He seems ok with gabapentin but when it wears off he seems like he is hurting alot. It's been a week now. Anyone experience with this sort of thing and this drug Gabapentin? Any suggestions? So worried Kay |
I have no experience with gabapentin , but he may just be very sore even though he has not broken anything, poor wee thing , he must have got a fright as well. You must have a got such a fright yourself. You never know what they will get up to, my Alfie , who is 15 never goes on the top of my sofa but when he visits my mum that's his favourite place! I think it's because he gets a great view out of her window, we place lots of cushions around but it make me nervous when he goes on the top of the sofa. Hope your little one is on the mend , it may just take a little time for him to be fully pain free. |
You might need to do more extensive testing. I would consult with a specialist .. probably internal med. YOu can find one at : www.acvim.org Or...perhaps your vet knows one he/she can refer you to. Gabapentin works well for pain. Maybe he needs an anti-inflammatory as well as the pain med. YOu said the vet gave him Rimadyl...none for home? A week sounds like a bit of a long time...maybe call the vet and have him seen today and take it from there. Good luck! |
Thank you everyone, I called the vet this morning, waiting for call back. They did not give me any other meds for home except Gabapentin. The vet did say it may take weeks for him to heal, her thoughts were that he would be very bruised. He has arthritis in his back legs hips. He also has spinal stenosis in his back. We have doggie stairs everywhere he is allowed to go. My heart breaks to see him hurt. Thank you all for your replies. |
Any updates? I hope that he is feeling better by now! |
Update yorkie fell off sofa Well, my Murphy is doing much better, he has a pinch nerve in his neck we suspect. I do alot of research and I noted how he acted, symptoms, time of day what he was doing. Then I told our vet what I suspected, she agreed and gave him an anti inflammatory drug along with his gabapentin. It's a shame I have to do the research and the vet did not pick up on this with his symptoms. He is doing much better now, thank you to all who responded and ask about him :) |
Glad to hear that Murphy is recovering. It must have been very scary for you. |
Thanks for updating! So happy for you and for Murphy! |
Very glad he’s doing better! |
I really regret hearing this. |
