Vomiting & Diarrhea Hi all - need some advice. Last night my little man Bailey (19 months old) was super whiny and distressed. Could not settle etc I also noticed that he had an irregular heartbeat and was shaking a little. About 3.30am this morning he went to the bathroom and demonstrated diarrhea, but seemed to be feeling better afterwards. Then an hour later I woke up to him hunched over and heaving. He vomited/regurgitated a small palm sized amount of chunky, brown liquid. (I would say this was approx 8 hours after he last ate. Afterwards he was quiet and clingy, but seemed ok again. He was no longer shaking and went to sleep happily snuggled up in my lap. Then a few hours later he vomited again, without warning. It was less chunky and a slightly lighter color this time. Then he went to the bathroom almost immediately afterwards - more watery stools. I have withheld food so far today, and allowed only a little water to prevent dehydration. The diarrhea has continued into early afternoon although of course there is significantly less coming out. Every few hours or so he is dry heaving with very little liquid being expelled, which is now starting to look more like the yellow/bile like frothy vomit. After each occasion he seems almost back to normal, is playful and alert. Usually I would be thinking about taking to the vet just to be safe, but I am currently stuck at home with a broken leg and cannot walk. In the night, trying to help him at speed, I also sprained my dominant wrist. Taking him to the vets like this is going to be tough and may distress him more than just riding it out at home. Any thoughts or advice? |
Have you tried feeding him boiled boneless chicken cutlets mixed in with white cooked rice. Pure canned pumpkin not the pumpkin you would use for pumpkin pie, a couple spoons usually helps the digestive systems. I personally would not home medicate, these little ones dehydrate quickly and things can go down fast. Do you have anyone you can call to help you get this pup to your vet. 24 hours of diarrhea and vomiting is not good, he needs to be taken to a vet. Please do what ever you have to do to get this little guy to the vet. |
That much vomiting with diarrhea is not good. With a small dog that can very easily dehydrate them. When my 16 pounder has what your describing and goes to the vet she is dehydrated and requires fluids so I imagine a smaller dog would be even worse. This might not be what you want to hear but you need to get him to the vet. My pups always come first I have taken several on emergency visits when I have had the flu, when I was unable to shower and so on. |
I agree...unfortunately a vet visit is warranted. Tyrone, my 3 year old parti, started having colitis attacks at about that age. They were painful for him, and needed immediate intervention to turn him around before he became dehydrated. Daily probiotic treats keep him symptom free for the most part now, but we always have diagel on hand if he starts to display loose stool. Hopefully your little guy will only experience an isolated upset, but do not delay having him evaluated. |
Hi Guys Thanks for the replies. I'll note the advice for future although sadly it came through a little too late for me to follow it when needed. I did speak to the vet on the phone twice and followed their recommendations. They felt I should treat and monitor at home, although we agreed times to re-review just incase. Glad to say Bailey is back to his happy bouncy self now. He had his last dry heaving spell about 1pm yesterday, slept through the afternoon and then woke up about 6ish full of energy and wanting to play. I gave him a little more water and some chicken to test his stomach - he wanted more but I held back wanting to see first how he reacted. After 90 mins all seemed well so I allowed him a little more of both mixed in with some rice. After eating he was boisterous for a few minutes but quickly settled down for a nap next to me. He woke a few hours later, again full of life and very energetic. This time I could tell for sure he was feeling better, he was bouncing all over the place and seemed positively joyful. I let him have a little more water before bed (still worried that we may see another vomiting session in the night). He expelled a sizeable amount in urine however so at least I knew he had processed a lot of what had been given. He slept through the night fine, at one point he was dead to the world which scared me a bit as he's normally quite a light sleeper and wakes up when I move. All was fine though - guess the little man was just pooped. This morning he's exhibited tons of thirst but he doesn't seem to want any food just yet (not too worried about that since he ate later than I would normally feed him yesterday). Finger crossed all is well now - Im just waiting for the next bowel movement to know for sure. |
That is great to hear! Thanks for the update. |
Happy to hear little man is getting back to his bad lil self. Hoping the diarrhea is finished. Also hope your leg heals quickly and you can get back to a normal life. Thank you for the update. |
Thanks :) No bowel movements so far today, but he ate like a champ 6 hours ago and has alerted me he wants water several times today so I'm hopeful that's a good sign |

Yes of course, but because I was restricting it the day before I'd taken his bowl away and was giving it to him a different way. Now his highness prefers to paw and bark at my glass demanding more hand fed action than go to the bowl that has been returned to it's usual spot. I must have shown him his bowl about 9 times yesterday. Such a diva! |
