Tramadol? It's been a very long time since I posted here but I'm hoping someone can help. My 13 year old Abbie has advanced stage kidney failure. She has cataracts and has gone from partial sight to completely blind over the course of 3 days. We are moving my son and his chihuahua into our house this weekend and I asked the vet for something to reduce her anxiety to help her get through what I know will be a stressful week or two for her. They prescribed Tramadol with each 50mg pill cut into quarters or a 12.5mg dosage. Abbie weighs 3.8 pounds or 1.73kg. The vet uses Plumbs Veterinary Drug Book and I checked there and it says 5mg/kg up to 10mg/kg if the lower dose isn't enough. Every other source I've found online uses a dosage of .45 to 1.8/lb. Im worried that I may overdose her. Any help? What would you do? Thank you!! Abbie's mom |
That does seem high based on the formulas. Even using the Plumb formula, that is 1.5 times the recommended dose. And all the other ratios I saw online are the same ones you saw - .45 to 1.8/lb . The prescribed dosage would be 10 times higher than that. I would start with a smaller dosage and see how he reacts. You can always up a dosage but once given you can't lower it. We'll keep you and your furbaby in our prayers. |
Thank you! |

Tramadol is a pain medicine not an anxiety medicine so I highly doubt it’s going to do anything for anxiety. I personally would ask for something else for anxiety. |
Just curious for those with experience with supplements... anyone heard of Endura Stress by Omega Alpha Pets? I got a sample from a pet store once when I was buying anti-anxiety treats and the store clerk told me that the Endura Stress was good for anxiety as well. When I read into it, they claim it's good for those who want to show their dogs too. Anyone use this before? https://www.facebook.com/OmegaAlphaP...5413064021204/ |

Totally agree. |
I don't know why the vet would think Tramadol would help with anxiety - that's doesn't make sense. I'd be asking for an anxiety specific medication for the best effectiveness. |

I was give tramadol years ago for pain due to arthritis |
Did you mean Trazodone? |
Yes tramadol is for pain. And trazodone worksauite well for anxiety. |
Thank you All! Thank you all for your responses. I ended up giving Abbie something called Composure that the vet suggested I use if not comfortable with the Tramadol. It didn't seem to do much for her but we made it through the weekend. Today she slept until 2:00 when we finally went in and got her up to go outside. I know she's slowly withdrawing and it won't be long before her time is here. We're so unsure what to do. She's completely blind and yet she still cocks her little head when you say her name. She still "paws" you to get a little more belly rub. But sleeps all day and all night other than a a couple of hours here and there. She doesn't seem to be in pain and is slowly adjusting to her blindness but she has no spark. I know none of you can say anything to make the decision easier but just had to vent a minute. Thanks, Donna |
Bless you for the love you have given Abbie. Our late senior sweetie, Katy, was with us for a year after being diagnosed with one or more life ending conditions. She too was not in pain, but her situation was different than yours. Her sight was not good, but she was not blind. Katy eventually lost the stamina needed for her various daily walks, so we put the buggy back in service. She seemed to very much enjoy strolling around the neighborhood several times a day. When she wasn't in the stroller or riding on my shoulder, she was sleeping/cuddling, etc. Throughout that year, she was as loving as ever. We were blessed to have spent that year with our little one. --KatysMom |
