Stomach blockage - human hair Roxie lost interest in food Monday, and Tuesday vomited several times and started to show signs of hypoglycemia, so I took her in. X-rays showed a large mass in her stomach. The vet couldn't identify the mass and said to give it a chance to digest overnight and take another X-ray the next day. By then it was Wednesday (yesterday) and while the mass was smaller, he said he'd have to surgically remove it. Endoscopy may or may not get it out, and would actually cost double what surgery would cost, so we said go ahead. She had a wad of hair that looked like human hair, some grass, and her last meal of undigested dog food in her stomach. The hair blocked the outlet of her stomach like it blocks our drain pipes. She also was anemic and had low proteins. She woke up today alert and hungry! She sucked up the small spoonful of prescription post-op food and kept it down. She's going to be fine, but I am emotionally drained! |
WOW - scary!!! But great job taking your kiddo in immediately and getting her checked out bc as you probably now know, GI blockages are deadly - they absolutely have to be addressed or death is imminent. SO happy to hear she is already eating, a very good sign! Keep us posted on her continued recovery :)! |
How scary. Glad she is ok. |
