Syncope? Myasthenia Travis? Liver shunt?Excitement brings on Jupiter 2 yrs old healthy dog began losing her hind legs and going down. Sometimes going into a dream like state lasting 5-15 seconds. ALL brought on by excitement. Ex. going out side, bite of steak, riding in car. The vet done basic blood work. All normal. They are referring us to UT Hospital for animals. The conditions above are some of the things the vet has mentioned. I’m exhausted mentally. 8 days in now. If anyone knows anything please say. I have watched every video I can find. And it seems there is nothing that’s even 80% like my Yorkie is doing. I’m lost, scared, and praying for a miracle. Thanks. |
So sorry your little Jupiter is going through something; I know you must be so scared. I so wish these little ones could tell us what's wrong. It's so tough to say what's going on here. Did you do BAT testing w/ your regular vet (Bile Acid Testing) to at least get an idea about Liver Shunt...? Regarding the "dream state" - is she standing up when that happens? This very much sounds like it could be seizure activity if she is truly not "present" while it's happening. If syncope is suspected, did your vet do an EKG? That should be explored if indicated after stethoscope exam. Also, bc of both the "dream state" and legs giving out - the UT vet should definitely palpate (and Xray, probably) the entire spine very thoroughly, and do full range-of-motion exam, most especially in the neck area. Yorkies are prone to AAI (atlantoaxial instability); it's probably not AAI - but bc it runs in yorkies, it should be crossed off the list. I'm so sorry to hear about little Jupiter. The toughest time with any health challenge is when you have not yet learned the details, or gotten a firm diagnosis. Please take care of yourself, as best you can, so that you can help Jupiter with her treatment plan! Sending positive thoughts your way. |
She is definitely down on her stomach when she goes into dream like state |
Thank you. I have an appointment at 4:00 today with a second opinion. I’m picking up her records, test results from her vet to take with me. Thanks for your kind wishes. I did call in sick to work, I think all of this is getting me down. I don’t feel good at all. Head ache. Body aches. Upset stomach. I’m sure it’s all the stress of worry. Maybe today will shed some positive light for everyone. Especially my Jupiter!! |
I really know little of the conditions except the internist thought my dog had myastestia graves. A blood test ruled it out. It only took over night to rule it out. Hope they do that test for your dog. Gew |
How did it go? Any update? |
Yes. Seriously, the internist was positive the test would be positive, but no, it totally ruled out myasthenia Travis. Of course, the reality was no better. He said myasthenia Travis can be managed and meds restore strength ‘magically.” Gew |
The 2nd vet did come up with the aa instability. She is not 100% sure but is sending us to UT this coming week. Thank you for your input as you definitely know what I’m talking about. |

Please let us know how UT goes... |
I’m sorry I have taken so long to update on Jupiter. Long story short: after 2 vets and then to the University of TN for small animals her diagnosis is Narcolepsy! Yes Narcolepsy. The neurologist surgeon at UT said although it is rare in animals he does see about 2 cases a year. This is a $1200 diagnosis but worth every penny. The dr seems to think it is a mild case considering by the time I got my appt for him Jupiter was down to 1-2 times daily of passing out. Now it’s been 11 days with no episodes. Now, what I think about all this is God answered my prayer. Seeing Jupiter doing this to now a normal even more energetic and happy dog has to be Devine intervention. I’m here to say the power of prayer is just that “power”. I want to thank everyone that read my post and prayed for my lil fur baby. Don’t ever give up! The Lord does have the final say!! ps. The first two vets said in their 15 and 29 years of service had never seen a dog do what Jupiter was doing and it didn’t look at all promising. #godblessedus |
Wonderful! May you continue to be blessed. Gew |

So very happy for you & baby. Yes, God is very good. I spent 2 years at U.T. With my baby with GME. They are wonderful people and so knowledgeable with illnesses no one has ever heard of. Unfortunately, GME is fatal. Miss my baby more than anyone, but God, will EVER know So happy U.T. Was able to help your precious baby. And yes going through GME & vets & U.T. Was very financially taxing. But, we sacrifice for the ones we love & for the unconditional love in return. Best of luck, & puppy prayers coming your way. |
