Losing weight/Cushings I'm posting this to get opinions. Callie has spent most of her life at 18 pounds. Over the last month she has dropped to 16.6. She is not sickly skinny and 16 was actually the weight she should have been at but Callie is not really eating less or doing lots of exercise so it scares me. She turns 11 on Thursday. Vet ran blood work and liver was a bit high which it has been for awhile but I guess nothing else really showed up. Callie has Cushings both regular and a typical. We have been treating with Lignans and Meletonin. Vet suggests we do the Cushings test again to see if those are working. None of this seems to bring up the weight loss in my opinion. What are yalls opinions or thoughts? |
I don't know anything that would be helpful, but I can pray for your dog and I will. I hope all is well. Thanks for being there for everyone here. |
Because she has Atypical Cushings and it was undiagnosed for a time (as it is w/ all Cushingoid dogs) - this means she had excess cortisol ('steroid') at all times in her system - this alone can cause weight gain and weight-holding and hunger. Since you're treating w/ the Lignans and Melatonin right now, it *could* be having some effect on the cortisol levels -- but yes, the only way to confirm that is to run another ACTH. On the upside, this could be a VERY positive sign that the regimen could be working for her :)!!! |

I have an 11 yo spayed female (Charlie) who was diagnosed with atypical Cushing's disease and is also taking the lignans and the melatonin. Unfortunately she also has a complicated urinary tract infection history that created urinary stones when she was 3. She had the stones removed and was placed on the Royal Canin SO diet and Craninidin supplement (Cranberry extract) which reduced the frequency of UTIs. We only feed her the Royal Canin SO diet and organic carrots along with distilled water. Unfortunately last week she began vomiting and having loose stools on Friday around midnight. We took her to vet quickly and she was diagnosed with pancreatitis. She has been feeling much better with metronidazole, pro pectalin gel probiotics and an anti nausea med to go along with her normal phenylpropanolamine and craninidin. The vet strongly recommended that we switch food from the SO to the I/D science diet until the pancreatitis subsides. I'm curious to know if/how we'll transition back to the SO or take a wait and see approach to see if the I/D food creates issues with her urinary tract. I now that the SO food is higher in fat and increases the likelihood of pancreatitis. Has anyone else gone through this with their yorkies and if so how was it managed ? |
Love to dream 88 , My Charlie who is same age with atypical Cushing's has her weight fluctuate from 7.4 pounds to 6.6 pounds with seemingly no change in her diet and exercise over the years. Multiple vets haven't been concerned over that fluctuation. That includes 2 internal med vets and University of Florida vet clinic. |
